Calgary Hitmen Hockey Players Score Points for Literacy with CBE Students
Students and staff at Penbrooke Meadows School scored literacy tips and challenged the Calgary Hitmen hockey players to an exciting game of floor hockey during the launch of the tenth book, Hitmen Courage by Albertan author, Sigmund Brouwer. Sigmund composes storylines using the Calgary Hitmen as characters to inspire students to read and build the foundation of academic success in earlier grades. Sigmund delivered an engaging presentation to students about achieving their personal best and reaching for their dreams whether they be in the fine arts, in sports or other areas students are interested in. These important messages relayed by Sigmund and Calgary Hitmen players clearly reflect the Calgary Board of Education Ends statements around academic success, personal development, character and citizenship.
The book also provides player profiles of the Calgary Hitmen team, which includes pictures, stats and other interesting information about each of the Hitmen hockey players. Featured on this year’s cover of the book include: Martin Jones, Brandon Kozun, Ian Schultz and Michael Stone. The event was made possible through the Calgary Board of Education’s partnership with ReadOn! Literacy for Life, the Calgary Hitmen Hockey Club, and exclusive corporate sponsor, Schlumberger Canada.
All students at Penbrooke Meadows received a copy of the book and had the opportunity to get their books signed by Sigmund and the hockey players. After, students were treated to a hot lunch brought in from the Community Kitchens program.
Also in attendance at Penbrooke Meadows for this celebration was Schlumberger Canada President: Derek Normore, Calgary Board of Education Trustee: Pamela King, MLA Harry Chase, Calgary Hitmen Director of Business Operations: Mike Moore and ReadOn! Literacy Chairman: John McMullen.
Vice Chair Trustee Lynn Ferguson and MLA Manmeet Bhullar attended an “on-ice” presentation and “puck-drop” with Derek Normore, President of Schlumberger Canada at the Hitmen game held at the Saddledome on Sunday, January 17 where over 5000 books were distributed to hockey fans as part of the ReadOn! Literacy for Life program.
As part of the initiative, all Grade 6 students in the CBE will receive their own personal copy of Hitmen Courage. More than 8500 copies of the book will be distributed to Calgary Board of Education students in the month of February. All Brouwer’s books in the series have been previewed and approved by the Research & Learning Commons.
The Calgary Board of Education is grateful for this partnership. It not only encourages literacy for children, but gives hockey players a chance to give back to the community. This is a great example of a partnership that motivates students to achieve excellence and strive for their personal best.
