inspiring leaders of tomorrow

Two Calgary Board of Education students were among the winners at Volunteer Calgary’s 14th annual Leadership Awards held on April 19th at the BMO Centre at Stampede Park. The Leaders of Tomorrow awards are presented each year to students in the elementary, junior high and senior high catgory for their energy, commitment and character as volunteers. This award, sponsored by EnCana, recognizes youth who make a difference in Calgary through their volunteer activities.

This year, Tony D. from William Taylor Learning Centre and Omar B., from Lester B. Pearson were each recognized for their hard work and dedication to give back to the community. They met with Mayor Dave Bronconnier and their efforts were captured in video clips shown at the awards banquet.

Tony’s determination and strong commitment inspired his entire school to raise almost $4500 for Brown Bagging for Calgary Kids. He has made a remarkable difference in the community, giving to those less fortunate than himself.

Omar volunteers his time for numerous community organizations including St. John’s Ambulance, Air Cadets, the Distress Centre and the Mayor’s Youth Council among others. Omar’s commitment to giving back to the community is an inspiration to all.

Volunteer Calgary's Leadership Awards are Calgary's premier, community-focused volunteer recognition event. These awards celebrate the contributions and accomplishments of outstanding volunteers in our community. The awards recognize leaders of volunteer programs, outstanding youth volunteers, employee volunteers, innovative volunteer programs and exceptional individual volunteers. The nominees represent the broad range of volunteers who work toward a common vision of a healthier and stronger community.
