Calgary Board of Education (CBE) Backpacks for Kids

The Backpacks for Kids is an annual campaign where organizations coordinate with their colleagues to give backpacks filled with a variety of school supplies such as pencils, crayons, and glue sticks for children whose families might not otherwise be able to afford everything their children need for school.

Corporate Partnerships creates a list of potential recipients based on need and requests from principals. Principals keep the backpacks on hand so that when the situation arises, they are able to support these students. Sometimes, the backpacks are distributed to students whose families are having financial difficulties. In other instances, there are children temporarily living in shelters for a variety of reasons, often leaving all of their belongings behind. One principal noted: “It has been of enormous help with our newly arriving immigrant families who come with nothing.”

Whatever the circumstances, the donation of backpacks makes a difference to our students and their families. Principals ensure they go to the students who need them the most. With backpacks and access to basic school supplies, students come to school prepared to learn and feel part of the learning community. The supplies that are in the backpacks gives students the tools they need both at school and also at home so that they can complete homework assignments or other special projects.

Please see the attached suggested supplies that could be added to the backpacks. It is up to each organization to decide what they would like to put together. Backpacks and school supplies may be dropped off at the Education Centre at 1221 - 8 Street SW from August 20 -mid-September or if a larger quantity is being shipped, please send to CBE Distribution Services at Highfield Centre: 3610 - 9 Street SE. When dropping off backpacks, please enclose a note with contact name, so we can acknowledge the organizations who support our students this way. Also, please label backpacks if they are more Grade Level specific (Grades 1-3, Grades 4-6 or junior/senior high unless they are fairly general for all)

Thank you to you and your organization for your support of Backpacks for Kids.  A highly successful public education system is created, in large part, by people like you and your colleagues who make an investment in the future of our children and communities.
