components of ELL instruction

- Explicit Language Instruction refers to the intentional teaching of language forms (grammar), function and vocabulary through specific lessons and learning activities. This may be done through separate classes, pull-out groups, or small group or individual instruction within the classroom.
- Differentiated Instruction refers to the way that teachers alter materials, assessment tasks, learner tasks or teaching strategies to reflect the unique needs of English Language Learners. Instruction focuses on the content and outcomes of the Alberta Program of studies, with attention to the language needed in academic subjects.
- Cultural Competence refers to the use of materials and teaching approaches that reflect cultural diversity and respect different perspectives and ways of learning.
The goal of English Language instruction is the successful integration of English Language Learners into regular programs of study.
