programming for English Language Learners

High School ELL/ESL programming

At the High School level, English as a Second Language (ESL) courses are offered as distinct classes in students’ timetables. There is an Alberta Education High School ESL Program of Studies as well as a number of Calgary Board of Education locally developed courses offered for High School credit. The focus of instruction is to develop academic language to enable students to be successful in their regular programs.  Appropriate courses are selected depending on English Proficiency level and students’ previous educational background. There is a process for evaluating equivalency of High school credits earned outside of Alberta.

Each High school publishes a “Registration Guide” describing all its course offerings, including ESL courses. Registration Guides can be viewed on each school’s website.
