As of the 2006-2007 school year, the CBE has mandated the learning of a language in addition to English as a required component of the Grade 4 curriculum. The implementation of language learning as a compulsory component of education will be phased in one grade level each year until the six-year course sequence is fully implemented in 2011-2012.
RATIONALE FOR NINE-YEAR FRENCH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (FSL) & LANGUAGE AND CULTURE(S) PROGRAMS OF STUDY
Learning another language is a lifelong endeavour and a gradual, developmental process. Language learning skills are transferable from one language to another, to one's first language, and to other subject areas. Learning another language provides students with an enriched educational experience, contributing positively to personal growth. Students gain both personally and academically by:
- developing cultural awareness
- understanding differing perspectives
- developing higher-level thinking skills
- participating actively in the community
- enhancing global influence and competitiveness
- helping to provide a multitude of services in the public and private sectors, including volunteer services.
As of September 2006, students, not already involved in a language program, started to learn another language as of Grade 4. Nine-year language and culture programs provide students in Grades 4-9 with the environment to develop language skills and cultural awareness over time. In Grades 10-12, interested students either continue to develop this language or begin the study of a new language. Nine-year language and culture programs provide students the opportunity to participate in a continuous, articulate language learning experience.
