Alberta Initiative for School Improvement (AISI)

what is AISI?

AISI is a bold approach to supporting the improvement of student learning and performance by encouraging teachers, parents and the community to work collaboratively to introduce innovative and creative initiatives based upon local needs and circumstances.

goal of AISI

The goal of AISI is to improve student learning through initiatives that enhance student engagement and performance and reflect the unique needs and circumstances of each school authority.

Personalization of Student Learning

The focus of this project is to enhance student engagement and performance by refining, combining and extending our understanding of continuous improvement. This is based in part on what the Calgary Board of Education (CBE) has learned from our previous AISI work. This project is unique in that the CBE will create system-wide intentional focus on personalization of learning for students through the “Instructional Core” focusing on Universal Design for Learning, student transitions, inquiry-based learning and digital learning environments. Our work will implement  a  “…learning model that considers integrating and differentiating curriculum, development of learner profiles, flexible program delivery, technology infusion, social construction of knowledge and individual student transitions” (CBE Three-Year Education Plan 2009-2012).

This Personalization of Student Learning initiative is highly integrated and aligned to accomplish an overall goal of systemic change. It proposes an integrated and interrelated system approach to the personalization of learning whereby staff, parents and community work in concert to  guide students in assessing their own talents and aspirations, plan pathways toward individual goals, work cooperatively with others, monitor progress of their explorations, and demonstrate their learning.

Secondary Schools that Support all Students

The CBE offers a variety of high quality learning opportunities for students through a rich landscape of program choices designed to accommodate diverse learning styles, needs interests and abilities.  Included in a vast array of program options are language-based programs; programs based on culture, educational philosophy, learning styles, academic enrichment or arts-centered learning; and specific interest programs focused on Canadian Studies, science, athletics and on-line learning.

There is no doubt that there is much to celebrate as we continue to have success in achieving student learning outcomes. The work in this project addresses some of the gaps identified in the following ways:

  • Assist all students to achieve their potential
  • Assist all students in graduating from high school in three years
  • Improve educational opportunities for students
  • Better prepare students for post-high school
  • Improve classroom instruction
