New immigrant families continuously arrive in Calgary, and their children are admitted into the Calgary Board of Education through services available at Kingsland Centre. Families are welcomed and oriented to the school system. Four service functions are provided to assist schools in supporting new immigrant children and families.

ADMISSION SERVICES

Coordinates and implements CBE and Federal Immigration policies and regulations regarding admission of students new to the CBE who are NOT Canadian citizens.

  • Landed immigrants (Permanent Residents)
  • Children of individuals who are lawfully admitted to Canada for permanent or temporary residence, or non-residents
  • International fee-paying students who are approved by the CBE’s International Bureau

Coordinates admission of students and determines if assessment is required.

ASSESSMENT SERVICES

Assessment provided for:

  • initial ESL placement for students new to CBE
  • Language Proficiency Assessment in student's first language
  • English Language Proficiency Assessment for ESL students

INTERPRETER AND TRANSLATION SERVICES

Responds to system-wide requests for

  • translation (system forms)
  • interpreters for parent-teacher conferences
  • phone contact to students, parents or guardians to communicate concerns about student attendance, field trip consents, health/immunization
  • orientation for parents in first language held at Kingsland Centre
  • assisting schools in parent orientations (Outdoor Education, Health Education, Human Sexuality program (Grades 4 to 6), Child Protection: "Who do you tell?"

MULTICULTURAL LIAISON SERVICES

Working with school staff, Student Services and system professionals, the counsellors facilitate:

  • cross-cultural communication and understanding
  • conflict mediation among parents, schools and students
  • case management of behaviour concerns, attendance, homework, academic concerns, legal and cultural issues
  • planning and development of workshops and conferences re culturally diverse, educational and social issues
  • organization of parent groups within school
  • networking with community groups and agencies to help meet non-educational needs of students
  • parent/teacher/specialist conferences
  • short-term counselling and referrals
  • communication and building of relationships between CBE and communities
