The Calgary Board of Education meets the needs of students who have been identified with Learning Disabilities in many settings. Most student’s needs are met within the student’s regular classroom in their community school. For those students who require more intensive support there are two options available at the upper elementary and junior high school level. These include Learning and Literacy programs (see links below) and Dr. Oakley School. For more information about programming, contact your community school principal.
The Learning and Literacy program is for students in grades 4 to 9 who have been identified with a learning disability. The purpose of the Learning and Literacy Program is to assist each student in gaining skills, knowledge and competencies to reach their fullest academic and social potential.
The Learning and Literacy Program has recently undergone significant changes. Please click on the following link for updated information about this programming.
Dr. Oakley School is a congregated setting whose program focuses on literacy development for students in Grades 3 to 9 who have been identified with a learning disability.
Dr. Oakley School provides intervention for learners who have difficulties in reading, writing, oral language and organizational skills. The purpose of the program is to help students develop literacy skills and strategies to become independent learners who are then able to return to their community schools.
These programs are limited in enrollment and admission involves an application and selection process. For entrance requirements and application process call your community school principal or contact Special Education Department.
