supporting students with severe internalizing mental health disorders

The Calgary Board of Education offers a variety of supports to students with Mental Health Disorders. These students are most often supported in their designated community school. Schools may access a variety of supports based on the individual needs of the student. Some students with severe mental illnesses are supported in a specialized program. The following programs are supported wholly by or in partnership with the Calgary Board of Education.

Transitions Mental Health programs

The Transitions Program is an educational program with a therapeutic component for students with severe internalizing mental health issues. This partnership program is supported by a Teacher, Education Assistant, Family Support Worker and a Mental Health Therapist. There are two Transition classes within the CBE, one for elementary and one for junior high students.

the AIM program

The AIM Program supports students in grades 7 to 9 with severe internalizing mental health issues. Ongoing active therapeutic treatment outside of the program is a requirement while the student is attending AIM.

the Class 1, 2 and 3

The Class 1, 2 and 3 support high school students with severe internalizing mental health issues that are impairing their ability to function is a regular school program. Continued active therapeutic treatment is a requirement while the student is in the program

the Adolescent Day Treatment Program

Adolescent Day Treatment Program is a short-term program for junior high and high school students with severe mental health issues. There is a classroom component as well as individual and group counselling, family support and on-site support from a psychiatrist. Referrals to the program go through the Mental Health Central Screening process.

the Young Adult Program

The Young Adult Program is a short-term program for adolescent students with severe mental health issues requiring a residential hospital placement. There is a classroom component as well as individual and group counselling, family support and support from consulting psychiatrists. Referrals are made through a psychiatrist.

Forensic Adolescent Program

Forensic Adolescent Program provides assessment and therapy to adolescents who are involved with the justice system.

the Eating Disorders Program

This is an intensive program, located in a hospital site, and is supported by therapists and a consulting psychiatrist. For school-aged students, there is an educational component.
