The Calgary Board of Education offers programming for students who are blind or visually impaired or deafblind to develop the necessary skills to be successful in the educational environment. Students who have been identified as deafblind are supported by the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and the Visually Impaired Program.
Calgary Board of Education provides an array of programming options for students who are blind or visually impaired or deafblind. The community school is the first placement consideration for programming. A Braille Resource Room program for elementary students is located at Captain John Palliser School. Short-Term Programs are also offered throughout the school year at the Vision Resource Centre – Calgary.
A specialized team of teachers and support staff work closely with schools, students and their families, assisting with program planning and delivery, provision of adaptive materials and assistive technology and orientation and mobility. Team members include Braille Assistants, Educational Assistants – Braille, Orientation and Mobility Instructors, Vision Program Teachers, Vision Specialist, and Vision Strategists.
Classroom instruction follows the prescribed Alberta Education Program of Studies and Expanded Core Curriculum for Students who are Blind or Visually Impaired.

The Vision Resource Centre – Calgary is one of the three Vision Resource Centres in the province that supports students with vision loss. These centres are linked by the Students with Vision Loss Initiative, Alberta Education.
Short-term programs offered through the Vision Resource Centre – Calgary include various components of the Expanded Core Curriculum as outlined in Alberta Education’s Essential Components of
Educational Programming for Students who are Blind or Visually Impaired.
These short-term programs are offered to students throughout Alberta and provide support in the development of disability-specific skills in the following areas.
- Compensatory or Functional Academic Skills
- Orientation and Mobility
- Social Interaction Skills
- Independent Living Skills and Personal Management Skills
- Recreation and Leisure Skills
- Career and Life Management Skills
- Assistive Technology Skills, and
- Visual Efficiency Skills
Each short-term program has a detailed curriculum designed to provide the students with disability-specific skills that support their core instructional program and inclusion in their community school program.
The Vision Resource Centre – Calgary also provides professional development to personnel who are involved in the education of students who are blind of visually impaired and deafblind. Program offerings also reflect the needs of parents in learning about the disability specific needs of their children and planning for their successful transition to adulthood.
