Background: Personal Development Interpreted, by Dr. Brendan Croskery

The CBE's progress toward achieving the outcomes of Ends 4: Personal Development is summarized in the latest monitoring report submitted to Trustees on May 5, 2009.

The five Ends were developed by the Board of Trustees to serve as a system-wide vision for CBE students. Each year, these five goals are carefully monitored and measured by CBE administrators who provide an annual update to the Board of Trustees. The report includes individual student and systemic results, and examples of student programs, activities and school events.

On May 5, 2009, the Ends 4: Personal Development report was presented to the Board of Trustees.  The presentation included a short video highlighting personal development opportunities offered within some of our schools.  The Ends 4 video captures three school stories of our students striving to reach their highest personal potential.

A Grade 12 student comment from the High School Exit Survey:

My CBE school experience has given me the foundation towards further education. It has also enabled me to develop valuable skills which I can apply to my life in general. I have developed and refined communication skills and leadership abilities. However what is most important is the work ethic and responsibility I have developed in the process. I am now much more prepared for a life of hard work and dedication.

What are the indicators used to measure Personal Development?

  1. Identify and actively develop individual gifts, talents and interests;
  2. Love learning;
  3. Be a critical and creative thinker;
  4. Be a confident and autonomous individual;
  5. Demonstrate the ability to adapt to changing environments;
  6. Develop the resiliency to overcome failure;
  7. Self-evaluate, set goals and strive to continuously improve;
  8. Demonstrate commitment to make a difference based upon personal convictions;
  9. Develop and maintain a healthy, active lifestyle.

How do we know we are achieving our outcomes?

We monitor through:

  1. Alberta Education's Accountability Pillar Summary and Survey
  2. CBE's High School Exit Survey
  3. School Development and Area Renewal Plans
  4. Inventory of Programs Survey
  5. Alberta Initiative for School Development Cycle 3 Projects
