Re: Change to school opening date

The opening date for Ron Southern School is changed due to delays in the construction process. At this time we know that the school will not be ready to open in September 2017. We are hopeful that the school will not be delayed long, but we are not able to confirm an opening date at this time. We will continue to monitor construction progress and will provide parents with an opening date by September. We understand a change in schools can be difficult for families and we are looking at how to best support students as they begin the 2017 school year at a host school and transition to their new school later on.

To that end, we are organizing based on the ‘school within a school’ concept.  Students who are designated to Ron Southern School will attend Braeside School in September until their new school opens. We will create a ‘school within a school’ where students are in classes with the same teachers and classmates as they will have when the new school opens.

Braeside School was selected as the host school instead of Ethel M. Johnson because it can accommodate all of the Ron Southern School students.  In this situation, we believe it will be best to keep the staff and students together and we have available space at an existing school that will allow us to do that.

The principals of Ron Southern School and Braeside School will work closely together to facilitate a smooth beginning to the 2017-2018 school year and a successful transition to the new Ron Southern School.

The operation of a ‘school within a school’ is not new for the CBE. Nine of the new schools that opened this year started their year in host schools.  We will take the lessons learned from those schools and ensure that our students and staff have great experiences.

What grades will be offered at Ron Southern School?

Following our engagement with parents on the grade configuration at Ron Southern School, we have decided that for the foreseeable future the school will accommodate kindergarten to Grade 6 students.  For the 2017-18 school year, Ron Southern School will offer kindergarten to Grade 5.  The school will not offer Grade 6 in the first year. Students currently in Grade 5 will complete Grade 6 at their current designated school.

Will my child attend Ron Southern School?

Please see the attendance area map on the CBE website showing the attendance area. Kindergarten to Grade 5 students living within the boundary for Ron Southern will attend that school when it opens.

Where do I register my child for kindergarten?

If you have a child eligible to attend kindergarten in September 2017 and you have not yet registered, please bring the registration form and required information to Ethel M. Johnson School.  You can find more information on registering for kindergarten at

How do I register my child if they are already in school?

Students who live within the Ron Southern School designation area and are currently attending the designated Calgary Board of Education school in a regular program will automatically be transferred to the new school.
Student transfers from other CBE schools or registrations from other school districts, charter schools and private schools will be considered by Ron Southern School administration.  Parents can take their registration form to Ethel M. Johnson School or contact the Ron Southern School office by calling 403-777-8780 ext. 2300.

Can my child take the school bus?

Students who are designated to Ron Southern School will be eligible for busing to Braeside School while the ‘school within a school’ is operating. Information regarding transportation is available on our website at and through your school.

Once Ron Southern School opens, all students will live within the walk zone of the school and will not be provided with busing.

For up-to-date information on the construction status of the school, please visit

We look forward to working with you as we begin creating a dynamic Ron Southern School community for students, their families and the school staff.
