Update | Delay in School Opening

Sept. 14, 2017

Dear Parents and Guardians

I would like to provide you with an update on our new school. In April, parents were informed that the opening of Griffith Woods School would be delayed until January 2018. Unfortunately, due to further construction related issues our school will not be ready to open in January as expected.

We are closely watching the construction progress and will provide you with an update through email and the school website in January when we have the information needed to confirm a revised opening date.

Griffith Woods School will continue to operate as a “school within schools” at Battalion Park School, A.E. Cross School, Jennie Elliott School and Bishop Pinkham School until our new school is ready to open.

Please contact me at griffithwoods@cbe.ab.ca or 403-817-3572 if you have any questions.

Sincerely,
Rhonda Choate, Principal
Griffith Woods School

Re: Change to school opening date

The opening date for Griffith Woods School is changed due to delays in the construction process. The school will now open in January 2018. We understand a change in schools mid-year can be difficult for families and we are looking at how to best support students as they begin the 2017 school year and transition to a new school in January.

To that end, we are organizing based on the ‘school within a school’ concept.  Students living in Springbank Hill and Discovery Ridge who are designated to Griffith Woods School will continue to attend their current school:  Battalion Park, Jennie Elliott, A.E. Cross or Bishop Pinkham from September 2017 to December 2017. To the best of our ability, we will create ‘school within a school’ classes comprised of students designated to Griffith Woods School and their teachers.  These classes will move as a group when the new building opens.

There will be some administrative challenges in accommodating students at four different schools however we believe this is the best temporary option for student learning.  Principals of Griffith Woods, Battalion Park, Jennie Elliott, A.E. Cross and Bishop Pinkham will work closely together to facilitate a smooth beginning to the 2017-2018 school year and a successful transition to the new Griffith Woods School.

The operation of a ‘school within a school’ is not new for the CBE. Nine of the new schools that opened this year started their year in host schools.  We will take the lessons learned from those schools and ensure that our students and staff have great experiences.

Will my child attend Griffith Woods School?

Please see the attendance area map on the CBE website. Kindergarten to Grade 8 students living within the boundary for Griffith Woods will attend that school when it opens.

Griffith Woods School will not offer Grade 9 in its first year. Students currently in Grade 8 will complete Grade 9 at their current designated school.

Where do I register my child for kindergarten?

If you have a child eligible to attend kindergarten in September 2017 and you have not yet registered, please contact the Griffith Woods School office.  The office is temporarily located on the Battalion Park School site and may be reached by calling 403-817-3572.

How do I register my child if they are already in school?

Students who live within the Griffith Woods School designation area and are currently attending the designated Calgary Board of Education school in a regular program will automatically be transferred to the new school.
Requests for student transfers from other CBE schools, other school districts, charter schools and private schools will be considered by Griffith Woods School administration.  Parents are asked to contact the school office by calling 403-817-3572.

Can my child take the school bus?

Students who are designated to Griffith Woods School will be eligible for busing to their current designated school as long as they live outside of the walk zone for that school. Information regarding transportation is available on our website at http://www.cbe.ab.ca/schools/busing-and-transportation/Pages/default.aspx and through your school.

What happens if the new school isn’t ready to open in January?

We will continue to monitor the construction status of this school. If the opening date changes we will let parents know as soon as possible and will provide information on a contingency plan. For up-to-date information on the construction status of the school, please visit

www.cbe.ab.ca/newschools

We look forward to working with you as we begin creating a dynamic Griffith Woods School community for students, their families and the school staff.
