Update

Oct. 23, 2017

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We have heard from parents and community members during this past month about their concerns and questions regarding the construction of the new school. With the objective of providing more timely information and as an extension to the monthly updates already provided, moving forward we will provide recurring updates that will share more detailed information regarding progress on the construction of Griffith Woods School.

As of mid-October, the construction challenges experienced during the summer of 2017 have been resolved and the project is now making progress with work underway weekdays, evenings and weekends. Earlier this summer, it was discovered that the school’s supporting columns needed to be insulated. This ultimately required work that had already been completed, such as some exterior brickwork and interior walls, to have to be undone to allow for the insulation of the columns. Unfortunately, this delay was significant enough to compromise the opening date.

The current priority is to complete work required prior to the onset of winter. Accordingly, landscaping and exterior brickwork are anticipated to be completed in early November. Concurrently, work is also progressing on the inside of the school, with walls now primed for painting on the main floor, some finishing paint completed on the second floor and suspended ceiling work advancing throughout the building.

We are working closely with the architect, project manager and general contractor to correct issues as they arise and accelerate the work where possible. The CBE takes new school openings very seriously and every effort is being made to ensure that Griffith Woods School will open for students as soon as possible. The construction of any new building has an element of uncertainty and it is truly unfortunate that this particular construction project has experienced the delays it has. In the end, what is most important is that the school provides a safe and high quality long-term learning environment.

To keep the school community updated on the project, the Area Director and I will hold recurring update meetings with the Griffith Woods School Council Co-Chairs, Ms. Dana Holmes and Ms. Elinor Wilson, until the school opens. The next update should be available towards the end of November and will be posted on the school’s website.

We will continue to closely monitor construction progress and anticipate having the information to confirm the revised opening date to you during the month of January.

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact the school Principal, Ms. Rhonda Choate at griffithwoods@cbe.ab.ca or 403-817-3572.

Sincerely,

Dany Breton, Superintendent
Facilities and Environmental Services
