When scheduling school bus routes Section 9 of The Calgary Board of Education's Administrative Regulation 6095 is followed.
For the 2016-17 school year, we will continue to work within our current CBE guidelines, where feasible, for yellow school bus transportation that elementary students will access a stop within 1.6 km of their homes and middle school/junior high students will access a stop within 1.8 km of their homes. This year, we anticipate that most students in a regular program and the larger alternative programs such as French, Spanish and TLC, will have a yellow school bus stop within 1000 m from home. This will be possible because of the higher density of student population within a community accessing these schools and programs.
Students in some non-language alternative programs will return to the use of congregated stops where it is not feasible financially to do otherwise. In most cases, these students will return to congregated stops, similar to service offered in the 2014-15 school year. Congregated stops serve students at a distance over the walk guideline. They are only used when there are very low numbers of riders from a community to a school and could be up to 5 km from their homes. The longest distances to a yellow school bus stop will be for students travelling across the city to a program at a single site. Their travel distance to the stop will vary based on the number of students and their locations in relation to the school they attend.
It is important to note that as we plan safe and accessible bus stop locations, there may be slight variances in distances for some students to ensure safety of the location. These changes will also impact other bus routes and stops across the system.
Parents should be aware of the following:
Every effort is made to keep ride times to within one hour each way. Due to the sparsity of students, buses must travel long distances to service the schools offering alternative and special needs programs, therefore, ride times may be longer in some cases.
Parents are responsible for ensuring their child's safety while traveling to and from, and while at the bus stop.
School bus routes were developed using all pre-registrations that were submitted by June 12, 2016.
Changes to routes will not be made until after Thanksgiving unless they are necessary, e.g., road closure.
If a student has more than one address, only the primary residence address will be used for transportation purposes. The CBE cannot provide two or more bus stops for one child; however, students are allowed to use any existing bus stop that is convenient for them as long as they have registered and paid for transportation.
Bus routes or schedules are subject to change at any time during the school year.
