Westgate School is located in the southwest community of Westgate. It is the designated French immersion school for students from the following communities: Aspen Woods, CFB (Currie/Lincoln Park), Christie Park, Coach Hill, Cougar Ridge, Discovery Ridge, East Springbank, Glammorgan, Glenbrook, Glendale, Glengarry, Killarney, Lakeview, North Glenmore Park, Patterson, Richmond, Rosscarrock, Rutland, Scarboro, Shaganappi, Signal Hill, Springbank Hill, Spruce Cliff, Strathcona Park, Sunalta, West Springs, Westgate, Wildwood and William Reid. It is also home to a new Spanish Bilingual program in Area IV. Area IV comprises 56 communities in southwest and southeast Calgary, roughly bounded by 16 Avenue NW and the Bow River to the north, the City limits to the west, Glenmore Trail SW to the south, and Barlow Trail to the east. Students in the French Immersion program move on to Bishop Pinkham or Elboya for Grades 7 to 9 and then on to either Central Memorial or Western Canada High School.

About the School

The school was built in 1960 and is situated on 3.55 acres.

In addition to classroom instruction, our teachers offer, with the support of parents, extra-curricular programs. Our library is well equipped with French, Spanish and English resources. We are wired for telecommunications with a central hub in the library. We have a computer lab for all students to access and a standard size gymnasium with a sliding partition.

The school was named after the community it serves in southwest Calgary.

  • Westgate has one system Learning and Literacy class in French immersion for Division II students.

  • Technology is a core element in all of our curricular areas.
  • We integrate the fine arts into all curricular areas.
  • Our school wide focuses are "Critical Inquiry" and "Character Education".
  • Westgate has active, supportive, and involved parents, including a dynamic School Council and Society.
  • The School Council and Society operate a lunch hour choir (three days per week) in the school and a Mad Science Club (five days per week) available to all students.
  • School Council and Society supports an "Artist in Residence Program" for Music and Movement Education during the day.
  • KIDZINC Daycare offers before and after school care in our school as well as an afternoon Kindergarten Daycare Program.
