The Children’s Village School is located in the northeast community of Renfrew.
About the School
The program responds to the special needs of children in Grades 1 to 6 who are exhibiting emotional and behavioural difficulties in their community schools. Parents are directly involved as part of the multi-disciplinary team in provision of a therapeutic approach. Students in this program benefit from low teacher-student ratio as well as individualized educational and treatment plans. Students access this program via a referral process initiated by the home school.
About School Name
The Children's Village School began caring for children in Calgary in 1908. It was an orphanage at the time. It no longer has a long-term residential program. The school has evolved into a school age day treatment centre focusing on the special needs of children and their families.
School Mission
Our essential task is to engage in learning and teaching activities which promote social and emotional development resulting in the positive regard for self and others.
School Philosophy
The Salvation Army Children's Village School has evolved into a treatment centre focusing on the special needs of children and their families. We believe these needs are best met when parents are partners in the educational and treatment components of the program. Consistency between the education program, family, and community is essential for the greatest progress. The program offered at the Village is grounded in the belief that a strong sense of identity and positive self-regard are fundamental to emotional health and social competence. Our work is to provide meaningful learning opportunities for children to develop confidence. Within the educational and treatment context, we can offer safety, choice, and challenge, but ultimately, it is the courage of the student that results in long lasting change. It is the child who must dare to trust, to risk new ventures, and to face painful events from the past. We applaud their spirit.
Unique Points
Our children and their families have many strengths and good potential. By nurturing and supporting these attributes, we ensure long term positive growth.
Learning and treatment plans are individualized to the complex needs of the students.
The multi-disciplinary team includes uniquely skilled teachers, child care counselors, psychologists, family therapists, speech/language therapist, and psychiatric consultants.
Salvation Army Children's Village School is a unique partnership between the Calgary Board of Education, Alberta Family and Social Services, and the Salvation Army.
Parents enter into a partnership with the Salvation Army Children's Village to jointly meet the educational and treatment needs of their children.
The learning environment provides opportunities for students, parents, and staff to experience acceptance, support, and wellness.
