Annie Gale School is located in the northeast community of Whitehorn. Families residing in the communities of Whitehorn and Temple are designated to attend Annie Gale. The feeder elementary schools for Annie Gale are Colonel J. Fred Scott, Chief Justice Milvain, and Guy Weadick. Students graduate from Annie Gale to either Lester B. Pearson or Forest Lawn High School.

About the School

The school was built in 1983 and is situated on 13.33 acres. The school has 20 classrooms, 8 relocatable classrooms, gymnasium, stage, library (fully networked), computer/tech. lab, art room, drama room, foods and fashion lab, construction lab, graphics/applied technology lab and music room.

About School Name

The school was named after Annie Gale, born Hannah Rolinson on December 29, 1876 in Netherton, England. She married William John Gale, a civil engineer, on February 9, 1901. Bill and "Annie" moved to Canada with their two children in 1912 on the encouragement of her sister who had moved to Calgary years earlier. Between 1912 and 1917, Annie became quite well-known for her volunteer work in Calgary. On December 10, 1917, she was elected to the Calgary City Council as an alderman. This was an historic moment in Canadian history. Until her election, no woman in Canada had ever held an elected office at any level of government - not municipal, provincial, or federal. In 1924, she ran for, and was elected as, a trustee to the Calgary School Board. Annie Gale eventually moved to Vancouver and lived there until her death on August 7, 1970, at the age of 93.

School Mission

Our mission is to advance the mission of the Calgary Board of Education: Educating tomorrow's citizens today.

As a dynamic learning community, we provide access, choice, equity and excellence. Recognizing that our school reflects the complex socio-economic and cultural realities that exist in the world today, our vision for Annie Gale is to:

  • Promote analytical and critical thinking skills in a current world.
  • Enable students to be self directed learners.
  • Enable students to live as social, moral and ethical citizens.

At Annie Gale we believe that:

    1. Students learn best when they are afforded the opportunity to:

  • draw on previous learning experiences
  • construct meaning
  • apply and expand current knowledge
  • recognize the significance of life-long learning
  • learn from each other
  • experience success

    2. Students are responsible for their own learning.

    3. Good teaching

  • is differentiated and accommodates diverse student learning needs.
  • provides a variety of authentic learning opportunities, activities and experiences.
  • incorporates broad based assessment for learning.
  • reflects cooperative and individualized programs from which all learners' success will be shared and celebrated.
  • allows students to be active participants in their learning.

    4. Teachers are learners who need the support, encouragement and opportunity to

  • learn from colleagues.
  • strengthen cross curricular ties.
  • research new ideas and practices.
  • familiarize themselves with and use new technologies.
  • develop, implement, and reflect on new teaching strategies.

    5. Parents working in partnership with the school need to provide an environment that supports learning and success for children.
