Balmoral School is located in the northwest community of Tuxedo Park on the corner of 16th Avenue and 2 Street NW. It serves as the Area 2 and 3 Middle School for the Traditional Learning Centre program. Currently it is home to 575 students from Grades 5 to 8.
About the School
Balmoral School was built in 1913 and is situated on 5.357 acres. As one of the few remaining sandstone school buildings in Calgary, it has been designated as an historical site. A popular myth is that the clock for the tower went down with the Titanic in 1912. While this is an interesting story, the clock was never purchased as World War I began, and there were no funds available. Over the years, Balmoral has had a proud tradition of excellence. William Aberhart and Ralph Klein were connected with Balmoral School. Both went on to become Premiers of Alberta.
In 2006-2007, Balmoral became the middle school site for the Traditional Learning Centre. The TLC started as an alternative program in 2002 at Colonel Sanders School with 360 students from K-6. It has expanded to sites all over the city, with over 2000 students attending the program from kindergarten to grade 11. It remains a popular choice for parents seeking a more traditional education.
Balmoral School serves 575 TLC students from Grades 5 to 8. There is an opportunity for students to complete pre-advanced placement courses in Mathematics, Language Arts, Social Studies and Science. The school also offers a strong fine arts program, French as a second language, a diverse options program, and participation in inter-school athletics. Students have access to three technology labs, including one wireless mobile. Character education forms the foundation for expectations with an emphasis on virtues, positive values, and respect for self, others and the environment.
Balmoral School strives to maintain high standards through continuous professional improvement. Our AISI projects(Alberta Initiative for Student Improvement) focus on “Curriculum and Diversity” and "Community Engagement and Partnerships."
