About School Name
Bob Edwards was the owner, publisher, and editor of Calgary's early local paper, The Eye Opener.
Born in Scotland in 1864, he came to Calgary in 1904 via Texas, Wyoming, Wetaskiwin, Leduc, and High
River. Bob Edwards became one of early Calgary's most colourful persons. To this day, he remains one of
our most memorable pioneers.
His beliefs about politics and social reform were ahead of his time, and through his paper, he utilized his
great wit and humour to push for social reform and betterment of the city. While his views were often
unpopular among those about whom he wrote, he was respected for having the courage to speak his mind.
Although he was a controversial figure, thirty-two years after his death in 1922 when the Men's Canadian
Club of Calgary met to name Alberta's Prize Personality, Bob Edwards was selected for his intelligence,
originality, and public influence.
In the foreword of his book, Eye Opener Bob, Dr. Grant MacEwan said of him, "Whatever sins may have
been laid at his door, his heart was big, his mind was clear, and, altogether, he was a most fascinating part
of early Alberta.
