Bowness High School is located in the
northwest community of Bowness, serving
the communities of Arbour Lake, Bowness,
Greenwood, Montgomery, Scenic Acres,
Silver Springs, Rocky Ridge, Royal Oak, Valley Ridge, Crestmont and
Tuscany. Junior high feeder schools to Bowness High School are Arbour Lake, Montgomery and Thomas B. Riley.
About the School
Bowness High School is a school rich in
history, memories, and achievements over
the decades. Since its opening in 1956,
Bowness has been a place of change and
development. All of the feeder communities
which provide students to Bowness, such as
Silver Springs and Scenic Acres, began to
take shape in the mid to late 1970's, during
the oil boom of Calgary. Even newer
communities such as Arbour Lake, Tuscany
and Rocky Ridge have taken shape as
recently as 1995. The Bowness Trojan Spirit
Bowness has grown through the ages and remains strong today.
Bowness is a comprehensive high school in northwest Calgary with a faculty of 75 teachers, 18 support staff, 1 computer technician, 1 career practitioner and a student population of over 1300 students. Bowness offers a strong academic
program, a variety of complementary learning experiences and a strong emphasis on technology.
Bowness
students perform well on the provincial Grade 12 examinations. Our instrumental music program boasts 140
students and the choral music program another 80 students. We have a tradition of a strong drama
department, which produces several major productions during the year. Students in the beauty culture
program are fully accredited upon graduation.
The computer/technical program consists of a Multimedia Communication Technology, Business Applications and Computer Assisted Drafting program plus seven permanent and two portable computer labs that are used both in academic and technology instruction programs. The focus on technology is not restricted to mere equipment, the entire staff of
Bowness High School has made it a priority to learn new technology and use this knowledge in the various
classes. Students have access to the Calgary Board of Education Integrated Media System, which enables
them to track down resources outside of our library. Students are also encouraged to draw on the Internet to
enhance their classroom work.
About School Name
The school was named after the town of Bowness. The community of Bowness was annexed into the City of
Calgary in the early 1960's. Before that, Bowness served as a junior and senior high school for the town of
Bowness.
The Bowness community is now part of the modern city of Calgary. Before it was annexed to the city,
Bowness began as a ranch around 1896 with only the railroad track and twin bridges to change its peaceful
ways until the real estate boom of 1911 brought wealthy Englishmen and their money into the valley. Long
before 1911, during the glacial age, Bowness was being built on an ancient river bottom. Sea shells from
eons past have been found in local gravel pits. Digging of sewer lines uncovered the bones of prehistoric
animals, and one bone in particular was identified as the tusk of a primitive elephant brought down during
the last ice age, at least 50,000 years ago. Native artifacts have also been found all through the valley.
The origin of the name "Bowness" is not clearly defined. However, several possible explanations exist. Land
titles dated at the end of the 1800's and early 1900's refer to Bowness Ranch. Another hypothesis is that
the origin of the name had to do with the large "S" which the Bow River makes through the valley. (From:
