About the School
The school was built in 1956 and is situated on 10.09 acres. In 1986 it was significantly damaged by fire at
its south end, and much of it was rebuilt to the original plan. The 31 classroom spaces in the building include 3 portables located west of the main building, 1 computer lab, 4 science labs, 2 home
economics facilities (cooking, fashion), a drama room, industrial arts facility and a music
room. During the late 1980's and early 1990's, some upgrading of the school occurred to science labs, the
computer lab and the library (now referred to as the Alf Boldt Resource Centre in recognition of one of its
previous principals). The school has a main gymnasium and stage on the main floor, a well equipped
fitness room and a smaller gymnasium below. There is a lunch/kitchen area there as well, and during the
lunch hours, the entire lower
concourse, gym, and lunchroom provide space for up to 550 students who stay for lunch. The school is
famous for its "earthworm," an indoor track facility built by removing earthfill in the crawl spaces below the
main building. The initiative was begun in 1960 with the leadership of R.B. Wilberg, physical education
instructor and E.M. Borgal, the principal. The area is no longer used (because of poor air quality), as it once
was, to train track teams during the winter months.
About School Name
The school was named after William A. Branton who served the Calgary Board of Education as both architect
and building superintendent from 1911 to 1956, when he retired. A native of Spalding, England, Branton
came to Calgary in 1905 at the age of 16 where he found employment in the construction industry. From
1908 to 1910 he attended Brandon College in Manitoba, and in 1911 he joined the school board under the
late Hugh McClellan, then building superintendent. In 1912, Mr. Branton became his assistant and eight
years later rose to the position of building superintendent and architect; positions he held until his retirement.
He was responsible for the construction of 60 plus schools during his tenure.

Unique Points
Branton is a dynamic and energetic learning environment with an excellent reputation for success
academically, athletically, within the performing arts, practical arts and, of course, within a rich and
varied extracurricular experience. We, as a staff, are committed to total individual development and
hope each year is a rewarding and successful one for our students.
Branton is a team of learners, leaders and friends where everyone counts. Through actions, words
and attitudes, we will try to cooperate through honest and genuine communication. Everyone at
Branton is bound by a code of rights and responsibilities called "Tiger Talk" which emphasizes:
equality, respect, friendship, safety, accountability, community.
Branton is organized according to interdisciplinary teams in which the core program teachers work
together collaboratively with a majority of the same students. Late Immersion classes are kept
together in grade 7 and 8 but are blended in grade 9.
t is our belief that the learning needs and the personal needs of students that impact on
learning are best understood by teachers who collaborate with each other and who work
together to help all learners in their charge to be successful.
The school has approximately 650 students in two tracks: Late Immersion
and Continuing Immersion.
Student performance on Provincial Grade 9 exams is consistently well above acceptable levels with
a higher percentage achieving excellent levels than the provincial norms. We feel, however, that the
students at Branton achieve success in a number of ways that are not represented by such
performance standards. We will continue to strive for excellence within a balanced program of
academics, athletics, option subjects and in a variety of extra-curricular endeavours - many of which
are especially challenging for excellent students.
In addition to academics, our program includes a balanced emphasis on performing and practical
arts. We provide an integrated emphasis on technology. Students must demonstrate the skills of the
introductory level in the CTS information-processing module by the end of grade 7. The school is
wired for Intranet and Internet capability, operates electronic cataloguing and retrieval in the library
as well, and is systematically integrating the required use of technology into all instructional areas:
performing arts includes band and drama with significant production opportunity; CTS courses
include construction technologies, design, foods, fashion, technical theatre, information processing,
graphics, photography and electronic publishing.
