Situated on a hilltop overlooking the city center, Sunalta School is located in the inner southwest community of Scarboro and serves the communities of Scarboro and Sunalta, although as a "school of choice", Sunalta's student body includes residents of over 50 communities in Calgary and the surrounding area.
About the School
Sunalta School is one of Calgary's most-established schools. Built in 1912, its sandstone architecture makes it a unique presence. Quarried from local stone, the school is one of the city's architectural treasures.
In 1912, the stone school opened its doors to students of Scarboro, Sunalta, Knob Hill, and Killarney. The stone school replaced the original "cottage school", a two-room wooden structure built in 1910. The school grew as the city grew around it. A modernization project in 1957 included a major addition of gymnasiums and a music room. In 1995 a mural by local artist Dean Stanton was painted on the north and west facing walls of the school, greeting thousands of motorists each day as they journey along Crowchild and Bow Trails. A new mural by Mr. Stanton is in the works.
With brightly lit classrooms, a well-resourced library, a networked computer lab, modern creative playground on 8 acres of greenspace, Sunalta offers an excellent educational environment.
In 2005 we celebrated the official opening of Sunalta's Habitat for Learning (H4L), a large-scale schoolyard naturalization project, consisting of a shade/tranqulity garden, a sunshine/butterfly garden, a sandstone amphitheatre and a stone labyrinth. A final component of this project is an electronic weather station, complete with a sky-view camera on the roof of the school. This outdoor learning and classroom space provides a variety of learning and exploration activities.
We are very proud of our school, its history and continuing vitality.
About School Name
The community of Sunalta, now an inner-city community is the school's namesake. Although the school is located in Scarboro, the original school, a cottage-style wooden structure located at 12th. Avenue and 16th. Street, opened in 1910.
School Mission
We provide a positive, supportive, and stimulating learning environment with emphasis on self-discipline, caring, independence, life-long learning, and personal excellence.
Statement of Philosophy
At Sunalta School we are committed to a collaborative learning environment that encompasses individual growth, responsiveness to change and student success.
We believe that each child is a unique learner who can be encouraged to attain his/her fullest potential. We provide a positive, supportive and stimulating learning
environment. Emphasis is placed upon helping our children develop into self-disciplined, caring, independent, life-long learners.
Our program focus is one of "balance". In educating the whole child, we build our school program upon four "pillars":
1. Academic excellence
2. Daily physical activity
3. Fine arts programs with emphasis on creativity and expression
4. Social responsibility and character education
Creativity and critical thinking are encouraged. We believe that students should become capable decision makers, possess a sense of community and grow into
responsible citizens.
We view Sunalta School as a home for the mind and a place where all are working and growing together.
