Sundance School is located in the southeast community of Sundance and is one of two public elementary schools serving the community. Sundance School is a dual track school offering programs in both English and French Immersion.
Our French Immersion Program includes Kindergarten to Grade 6 for 2009-2010. French Immersion students in Grades 3-6 from the communities of Bridlewood, Chaparral, Evergreen (including Evergreen Estates), Midnapore, Millrise, Shawnee Slopes, Shawnessy, Somerset (including Somerside) are designated to Sundance School. French Immersion students in kindergarten and grade 2 from the communities of Chaparral, Evergreen, Midnapore, and Sundance attend Sundance School. Students in the French program go on to attend Fairview, Harold Panabaker and Dr. E.P. Scarlett High School.
The school serves those students from within its designated boundary in Sundance in the Regular program K-6.
Students in the Regular Program from within the Sundance community boundaries go on to attend MidSun for Grades 7 to 9 and then Centennial Senior High.
About the School
The school was built in 1983 and is situated on 9.2 acres. The core of the building has 17 classrooms, plus a music room, a library, a large gymnasium, a stage and a conference room. Each classroom is equipped with 3 or 4 MacIntosh computers which are networked through a high speed fibre optic backbone. Our mini-lab in the school library also uses this network. We have our wireless network of 60 laptop computers operational as well. The school is equipped with Smart Boards and LCD projectors mounted in every classroom
The spacious school grounds overlook Lake Sundance. There are several soccer fields as well as baseball diamonds, a paved compound, a new creative playground, basketball hoops, and tetherball poles. Classes are able to use the adjacent space of Sundance Park for curriculum extension.
About School Name
The Sundance community was named in honour of the greatest festival of the First Nations of the Plains - the Sun Dance. The park and lake provide a focal point for the entire community and the first school built in the area was logically named Sundance Elementary School.
