Sunnyside School is located on 2.9 acres in the northwest community of Sunnyside, north of Memorial Drive and east of 10th Street N.W., and in close proximity to downtown. Students from Sunnyside School typically move on to Rosedale or Queen Elizabeth School for Grades 7 to 9.

About the School

This beautiful and historic school, built in 1919, celebrates its 90th Anniversary in 2009. There are seven spacious Kindergarten to Grade 6 classroom spaces, a gymnasium and a well-resourced library and computer lab. The sunny, cheerful indoor courtyard is used for a variety of learning activities and family gatherings.

Three naturalized areas highlight the outdoor space. Riverstone Park, Prairie Patch and Aspen Woodland were developed between 1998 and 2002 and represent the flora and geography of Alberta. Children are frequently observed in these areas involved in creative play activities inspired by their surroundings. A large Creative Playground was constructed in June 2004.

All children are welcomed. Diversity is respected and celebrated. The professional staff has been inspired by the work and philosophy of schools in Reggio Emilia, Italy that recognizes the needs of the whole child, academic, emotional, physical and spiritual. Children construct and refine knowledge as they discover more about themselves and the world around them. An energetic, creative teaching staff facilitates the implementation of this philosophy of teaching and learning. Children are encouraged and supported in following their interests and passions through project based learning opportunities. A mentoring program teams older children with younger ones, promoting peer teaching and enhancing the family feeling in the school. A Grandparent Reading Program runs in the library every Wednesday afternoon. Artist-in-Residence programs build the skills and proficiency of both children and staff.

The school offers a CBE Lunch Program. A privately-run Preschool Program and an Out of School Care program for Kindergarten to Grade 6 support the needs of our families.

About School Name

The school was named after the community it serves.

School Mission

In collaboration with children, parents, our communities, and one another and in an atmosphere of openness and care, our mission is to prepare children to meet life's spiritual, cultural and intellectual challenges, today and in the future, through enabling and fostering wholistic growth.

School Philosophy

  • We believe that learning is at the heart of our school community, where children develop multiple literacies and appreciations to learn and express ourselves in diverse ways.
  • We believe that learning is a personal, joyful and collaborative process of constructing knowledge through the use of critical inquiry and discovery.
  • We believe that the development of strong positive relationships enhances learning.
  • We believe that offering a challenging education means high expectations for learning and behaviour, caring for students and honouring each child's potential.
  • We believe that continuity within the school, as well as between home and school, is an important factor in student success.
  • We believe that diversity enriches our learning community.
  • We believe that thoughtful working together creates a better environment for all members of our school community.
  • We believe in the creation of a learning environment which nurtures self confidence and self-esteem.

    Vision Statement

Our vision is to welcome, support and challenge learners through their elementary years by understanding and respecting the development of multiple literacies and appreciations.

    Statement of Purpose

Our purpose is to provide a quality education that responds to the students' progress and learning needs, and allows them to develop multiple literacies and appreciations so they can express themselves in diverse ways.

  • School Motto

    "Keep the Sunnyside Up!"

    Unique Points

    • We are a warm, caring, respectful environment that supports diversity and fosters creative thinking.
    • Our small size promotes a unique family atmosphere.
    • Being only an approximate 10 minute walk from the downtown area we have easy access to Prince's Island, Glenbow Museum, City Hall, SAIT swimming pool, Science Centre, and the EPCOR Centre for the Performing Arts, all of which are used to enrich the students' learning.
    • The Community is involved in the development of Riverstone Park, a long term environmental classroom project on school property. Phase I was completed May 1999. Phase II, our creation of a patch of prairie, was built in June 2000. This project won 1st Prize in the Calgary Horticultural Society Garden Competition - Schoolyard Naturalization Category during summer 2000 and second place in 2001. Phase III, Aspen Woodlands, was begun in May 2002. This project coincided with our work as the Arbor Day School 2002.
    • There is provision by the YMCA for a wide variety of activities in their before and after school program.
