Queen Elizabeth School is located in the northwest inner city community of Hillhurst, serving the communities of Hillhurst and West Hillhurst. Students from Queen Elizabeth School continue their education at Queen Elizabeth High School.
About the School
The school was built in 1957 and is situated on 15.11 acres with a large playing field and creative playground. In the 2009-2010 school year, there is one classroom designated for Kindergarten, and a class each in the following configuration: grade one; grade one/two split; grade two; grade three; grade four; grade five; grade six. One classroom is used as a music room. Two classrooms are used for Deaf and Hard of Hearing System classes.
The school has a large, well-equipped gymnasium. A double classroom area has been converted to create a library. In addition to the print and audio-visual resources in the library, there is a class set of networked computers. Each classroom has some computers to facilitate the integration of technology into daily curriculum work. The school is completely network-cabled and has wireless access. In the 2006- 2007 school year a student-created mural depicting the flora and fauna of Alberta in the four seasons, an outdoor classroom amphitheatre and a sensory garden were added to complete the final phase of our three year Schoolyard Enhancement Project.
About School Name
The school is named after Queen Elizabeth II, the current reigning monarch of Canada.

Unique Points
Queen Elizabeth School community is gradually changing and is showing increasing socioeconomic and cultural diversity which is reflected in the student population. Our community values diversity, inclusion and acceptance of individual differences.
A significantly unique aspect of our school is the inclusion of Deaf and Hard of Hearing students. This provides an opportunity for learning about another language(ASL)and culture as well as the recognition of a wide range of student learning styles and abilities.
The mandated Alberta Education Program of Studies is the basis for all curricular work. Our teachers are primarily Elementary Generalists.
Queen Elizabeth Elementary is located next to Queen Elizabeth Junior/Senior High School. Students are able to progress from Kindergarten through to Grade 12 by attending these two schools.
Queen Elizabeth Elementary School offers two system Deaf and Hard of Hearing classes (Total Communication approach) for students in grades one through six.
Students in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing program are provided with educational services geared to their communication needs. Queen Elizabeth Elementary offers a Total Communication program that incorporates the use of sign language, hearing aids, FM systems, speech and speech reading skills for communication. Educational programs in congregated classrooms have teachers of the deaf, signing educational assistants and educational interpreters to support the program.
All of the students at Queen Elizabeth Elementary have some opportunity to develop sign language skills.
Our whole school community is involved in many initiatives including:
School Resource Group and Resource support
ESL instruction
Extracurricular programs and special events
Fine Arts Residencies
Outdoor School
Comprehensive Physical Education Program including swimming lessons
Music Listening and appreciation
Student Leadership Development
Queen Elizabeth Elementary has an active School Council that participates in a variety of school committees and supports student learning through initiatives such as literacy, fine arts, technology, volunteer programs and fundraising for extra resources.
