Rideau Park School is a blended learning community of some 518 students from Kindergarten to Grade 9 located in the southwest community of Rideau Park. Elementary students come from the communities of Cliff Bungalow, Erlton, Mission, Parkhill, Rideau Park, and Roxboro. The junior high population extends beyond the aforementioned communities to include Elbow Park and Ramsay. From junior high, students move on to Western Canada High School.

About the School

Rideau Park School, built in 1930, is situated on 3.523 acres. The present site was once a buffalo jump. Workmen excavating for the foundations of the building dug up skulls of some of these animals, probably driven over the cliffs above in a long forgotten Indian buffalo hunt. Later, the site was used by William Whitburn as a pasture for his dairy cattle, and later still, it was graveled over to make a school yard. This gravel now forms the base of Rideau's playing fields.

School Organization

The elementary program is organized into seven multi-aged classrooms, two at the Grade 1/2 level, three at the Grade 3/4 level, and two at the Grade 5/6 level. Morning and afternoon kindergarten classes are offered. Junior high school students are organized into four homerooms at each grade. Receiving instruction from subject specialists, the junior high students have classes in various locations around the school.

Complementary option courses are offered to students in grades 5-9 and allow students to develop skill in the areas of food preparation, construction, technology, leadership, fine arts, second languages, and outdoor pursuits. The school day is organized into six 55 minute blocks, with a one hour lunch break.

Unique Points

    Statement of Purpose

Rideau Park encourages a love of learning, consideration of others, and the development of skills and appropriate behaviours. Students are challenged, in a safe environment, with adequate resources, to be the best they can be. Rideau Park is a place of continuous growth where learning encompasses social, physical, creative, intellectual, and personal development for children E.C.S. through grade nine. This environment encourages responsibility and independence through a wide variety of relevant learning experiences intended to bring excitement and joy to the learner.

The process of learning is honoured, and excellence is respected in an environment of cooperation, trust, fairness, choice, and clear expectations. The development of self-confidence and positive self-esteem will contribute to our young people becoming lifelong learners.

Rideau Park School's Mission, "Toward Responsible Citizenry" is highlighted in many significant ways across the learning continuum. Students across the grades participate in a broad spectrum of learning experiences that serve to extend our learning community beyond the classroom and to make meaningful, authentic connections between the program of studies, the workplace, and the community at large.

Learning with technology is a very important initiative at Rideau Park School. Working toward the goals of a well-developed technology plan, all students at Rideau Park have access to a range of hardware and software options to enhance learning both in the technology resource centre and in the classrooms.
