school profiles

Please note | we’re building a new interactive mapping tool to make it easier to find schools using a familiar web interface, and will no longer be using the maps on this page. Because of that, these interactive maps show the boundaries for the 2013-14 school year, and may not be accurate for the 2014-15 school year. For current information, please refer to the “find a school by address” tool to find your designated school, see the list of schools by residential district and grade, or visit the school profile of the school you’re interested in to see the walk zone map in PDF. Thanks for your understanding, and we look forward to sharing our new site with you soon.

About the School

The school was built in 1978 and is situated on 26.07 acres. The school has 25 classrooms, a large gymnasium, a research center with a pod of computers located in the library, and a creative playground on site that serves our learning community well. A lunch supervision service is available to students in need of this service.

The Mandarin (Chinese) Bilingual Program will expand to Kindergarten to Grade 4 in 2014-2015, each year another grade will be added until we get to Grade 6. Entry points are K and Grade 1. Any student entering in Grades 2 6 will be required to pass an English and Mandarin Literacy exam.

About School Name

Midnapore schools have served the children and families of this area for over 120 years. Midnapore School originally served the Hamlet of Midnapore which consisted of only a church, post office, and woolen mill. Children in the township rode their horses or walked for many miles to attend classes in the small Anglican church (still standing as an Alberta Historic Site) from 1887 until 1891. A new building was constructed in 1890 and classes were held there from 1891 until 1917. A new school was built on the west side of the CPR railway tracks and classes were taught there from 1917 to 1942. In 1942 the Midnapore Community Hall was purchased and converted into a two-room schoolhouse. Classes were taught there from 1942 until 1969. The current Midnapore School site was opened in 1978.
