Capitol Hill School is located in the northwest quadrant of Calgary. It is a K - 6 school with approximately 165 students enrolled. The school serves the communities of Capitol Hill, Collingwood, Banff Trail and Charleswood and is located within the boundaries that include 14th street to the east, Crowchild Trail to the west, 16th avenue south and Northmount Drive to the north. The majority of the students live within walking distance. Forty-seven (28%) of the students do not reside within the Capitol Hill School catchment area and have chosen the school for its "Learning Through the Arts" Program, system special education classes and for its initimate and small school population of approximately 165 students. The on-site before and after school "Adventurers Child Care Program" and the Adventurers Kindergarten Enhancement Program are also appealing to Capitol Hill families. The community consists primarily of single family dwellings and some multi-family dwellings. More recently, the development of new homes is very attractive to families who enjoy the neighbourhood's central location, proximity to downtown, accessible shopping and, educational institutions such as the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) and the University of Calgary.

About the School

Capitol Hill School was built in 1950 and is situated on 3.9 acres. The school is a small-sized school which represents many communities that select Capitol Hill School for its intimate, warm and caring learning environment. It consists of 15 classrooms, library, gymnasium, music room, art room, and computer laboratory. A half day CBE morning kindergarten program and an afternoon Kindergarten Enhancement Program give families the opportunity to attend a full day kindergarten program. Two beautiful naturalization parks, located on the southeast corner of the school and front of the school, align with our environmental projects. At Capitol Hill School, we celebrate a diverse school population characterized by the following statistics. Our students represent 14 different languages and cultures. This diversity represents 30 students or 18 % of the total population. The school includes two CBE special education programs. These include the Training in Attitude, Skills, and Communication (TASC) Program and a Bridges Program (Behavior Adaptation Therapy) for Division 1 students. Hence, students at Capitol Hill School are empowered by the CBE ends statement of "citizenship," where each student has the opportunity to be an informed and involved member of his or her local, national and global communities.

About School Name

The school was named after the community in which it is located (Capitol Hill).

School Mission

"Educating Tomorrow's Citizens Today."

At Capitol Hill School, we hold high expectations for learning and behaviour. We value the uniqueness of each child and we value the process of learning which results in quality and creative evidences that are lived, shared and displayed in multiple ways. Curriculum is rich and rigorous ensuring academic success for all students.

School Vision

Capitol Hill School is a place of excellence that promotes lifelong learning and values responsible, contributing citizens.

School Philosophy

We believe every learner makes a valuable contribution to the learning environment. Capitol Hill builds upon a family model where there is a sense of belonging and where all children are valued and strive for success. All are encouraged to accept others and have a sense of connectedness to family, school, community, and the world.

A positive team effort leads to purposeful learning which reflects personal and societal needs. At Capitol Hill School, students are empowered by the virtues of the Circle of Courage - generosity, belonging, independence and mastery.... as we strive to achieve our goal, to ensure each student opportunities, to experience citizensship by being an informed and involved member in his or her local, national and global communities. Each student will acquire the skills, attitudes and knowledge to achieve personal highest potential in their journey to deepen their understanding of "citizenship". It is our goal that each student will possess the character to do what is right, act morally with wisdom, and balance individual concerns with the rights and needs of others. By endorsing these virtues, our aim is to demonstrate a set of shared beliefs which ensures that we can best learn, play and work together thus, fostering a learning environment that is inviting, safe, promotes positive relationships, develops social competence, advocates risk taking and tolerance for democracy and citizenship.

The encouragement of growth in physical, social, and emotional qualities compliments an emphasis on academics. Our children need to be responsible learners and confident problem solvers who can respond flexibly to change.

Through a variety of experiences, children will strive to develop the ability to work with others toward self-development goals. Learning is supported by a warm, caring environment, a variety of learning and teaching styles that encourage both individual and cooperative learning, and a clean and attractive school that fosters respect and pride. Growth is celebrated, and ideas are shared.

The relationship between Capitol Hill staff, students, parents, and the community is one of responsible partnership through open dialogue where all are welcome. We recognize the importance of parental guidance in the learning process. This shared sense of ownership by all stakeholders (child, home, school, community) builds a positive foundation for lifelong learning.

School Motto

Unique Points

  • Curriculum Breadth - Classroom teachers are responsible for teaching the core curriculum as well as creative arts, physical education and health. Specialist teachers are responsible for teaching music and French. A part-time resource/ESL teacher helps meet the diverse learning needs of children. A technology specialist collaborates, plans and team teaches with classroom teachers in deepening our inquiry studies.

  • Diverse Opportunities- There is a deep commitment to environmental studies, to daily physical education and to the infusion of technology and creative arts. Extra-curricular activitites provided in these areas nurture children's imagination and develop their skills and talents.

  • Parent Involvement- Parents play a vital role in all aspects of our school. On a regular basis, parents can volunteer in classrooms and the school's special projects. All parents are members of our School Council and Parent Association. The School Council is the advisory group and the Parent Association is the fundraising group.

  • Student Leadership- Older students are provided with many opportunities to develop their leadership skills and to contribute their skills and strengths to our school. Opportunities provided include equipment monitors, recycling club, environmental club, planning and organizing special events such as the Halloween Family Dance, Art Walk, Sports Day and Winter Celebration.

  • Learning Communities- Our school is organized into learning communities (grades K - 6) where students are buddied to discuss and participate in activities around our central work of "citizenship". This organization offers 3 main advantages: to provide an opportunity for older and younger children to work together; create a sense of belonging for the children and staff; and to create an opportunity to share in activities which focus on the school's Circle of Courage virtues - belonging, generosity, independence, mastery.

  • Learning Through the Arts- Our school is a LEARNING THROUGH THE ARTS school where instruction embraces the ideologies of multiple literacy through inquiry-based learning. This is achieved by offering instruction that examines the philosophical notions of "constructivism" inspired by the Reggio philosophy. Cross-curricular connections of subject areas, by infusing the arts, ensures learning which is purposeful and meaningful for all children. By instructing in these kinds of ways, we are able to address different learning styles (auditory, kinesthetic, visual), as well as, differentiated instruction to meet students' learning needs. This way of learning engages all children so that they have opportunities to explore, be curious and inquire about new knowledge.

  • Academic Excellence- Capitol Hill students, staff and parents strive for academic excellence. High standards for learning are established for each child. Incorporated within students' instruction is a daily physical education program, strong technology focus, fine arts program supplemented by CAPES and the Alberta Foundation for the ARTS, French as a Second Language for grades 4, 5 and 6 students and an effective student services team to ensure differentiated instruction. High academic achievement, within an inquiry-based pedagogy, is an expectation for all Capitol Hill students.

  • Inquiry Learning- Rich and engaging educational experiences that entice children into learning, to formulating important questions they want to seek answers to, and to being active participants in learning are presented. Working alongside of experts deepens children's learning experiences. There is a seamless approach in taking up inquiry topics. There are definine times throughout the day devoted to specific subjects; there is also time devoted to inquiry learning where the meaningful connections of subjects occurs.

  • Links with the University of Calgary- Participation in the University of Calgary Master of Teaching Program presents an exciting venue for both experienced teachers and for university students who receive experience working directly in the school environment. Our school has also partnered with the University of Calgary for professional development activities.

  • Citizenship- Students at Capitol Hill School have the opportunity to experience citizenship by being an informed and involved member in his or her local, national and global communities. Each student acquires skills, attitudes and knowledge to achieve highest personal potential in their journey to deepen their understanding of "citizenship". It is our goal that each student will possess the character to do what is right, act morally with wisdom, and balance individual concerns with the rights and needs of others. Our students have many opportunities to develop the intrinsic values of citizenship through local, national and global events such as the Terry Fox Run, United Way and UNICEF. The virtues of the Circle of Courage - generosity, belonging, independence and mastery influences our work.

  • Adventurers Program- The on-site before and after school "Adventurers Child Care Program" is appreciated by Capitol Hill School families. As well, the Adventurers Kindergarten Enhancement Program is a half day, afternoon kindergarten program offering kindergarten children the opportunity to attend school full-time.

  • CBE Operated Lunchroom Program- Capitol Hill School operates a CBE operated lunchroom program for grades 1 - 6 students. We currently accommodate 100 students for lunch.
