About the School

The school was built in 1973 and is situated on 9.19 acres. It was originally built as an "open area" school in which the Learning Commons is surrounded by instructional areas. In more recent years a new wing consisting of four relocatables was added. Two more relocatable classrooms were added to the east of the school in 2005-2006. Wall extensions and doors were installed so that teaching areas can be closed off from the Learning Commons core. Special facilities are available for physical education, music, and technology.

About School Name

The school is named in honour of Chris Akkerman, a former mayor of Forest Lawn and prominent businessman. In 1954 Chris Akkerman was elected Counsellor of Forest Lawn and in 1959 Mayor. He was recognized in 1969 by the provincial government for his "outstanding achievement in the area of community participation."
