Escuela Collingwood School is located in the northwest community of Triwood, serving many communities on the northern side of Calgary as the site of the International Spanish Academy (*ISA). The ISA is a bilingual program of choice for many families. Our school is a K - 4 English/Spanish Bilingual school. We have 395 students in 19 classes.

About the School

Escuela Collingwood School is a Spanish/English BILINGUAL school with 19 classes from Kindergarten to Grade 4. Our school is a dynamic and exciting learning environment. Escuela Collingwood School is the largest of several public elementary schools in Alberta to offer the International Spanish Academy (ISA). We offer a wireless technology environment (the first CBE Elementary school to do so), daily Physical Education classes and a comprehensive extra-curricular program. The core academic curriculum is based on the Alberta Program of Studies for both tracks. Present staff include a Resource Teacher and two bilingual Music Specialists. Instruction in Spanish Bilingual classes is provided by fully bilingual teachers.

The school was built in 1959 and is situated on 8.72 acres. The school has 24 classrooms. A school addition was built in 1969 which included a central library with 6 adjoining classrooms.

In 2001 Collingwood became an International Spanish Academy and uses the informal name "Escuela Collingwood School". The Spanish Bilingual program was started for Kindergarten , Grade One and Grade Two and served the entire city of Calgary. In 2002 Escuela Collingwood School added a grade three Spanish Bilingual class and with the opening of a second International Spanish Academy at Canyon Meadows in the South, Escuela Collingwood School now serves the north section of the city of Calgary (residents of Areas II and III). Each year another grade of Spanish Bilingual was added to the school and we now have a Kindergarten to Grade 4 program. When our students finish Grade 4, they are transferred to Senator Patrick Burns Middle School in order to continue with the ISA program of studiesin grades 5 to 9. The entry level for the Spanish Bilingual program is Kindergarden and Grade One. Collingwood accepts students new to the program who reside in Area 2 and 3. To start in the Spanish Bilingual program for other grades a student must pass a written and verbal Spanish test.

Instruction follows the Alberta Program of Studies, however 50% of the day is conducted in Spanish. Subjects taught in Spanish are: Spanish Language Arts, Math, Physical Education and some aspects of Music and Health.

About School Name

The school was named after the district it serves. The Spanish word for "school" is ESCUELA, and we have "unofficially" added this word as part of our school name.

School Mission
