David Thompson School is located in the southeast community of Acadia, serving the communities of Acadia, Chaparral, Copperfield, MacKenzie Towne, and New Brighton.
The elementary feeder school for David Thompson is Acadia. Students move on to Centennial High School (Chaparral), Lord Beaverbrook High School (Copperfield, MacKenzie Town, New Brighton, and Acadia) or Lord Shaughnessy High School.
About the School
The school was built in 1962 and has completed a five million dollar renovation (Sept 2000). We are organized into five learning communities, each of which has a science / project room, break-out rooms, and the flexibility to open a wall between two of the classrooms to create a large instructional space. Our recent renovations also include the learning resource center (library), band room and four physical education locations (main gymnasium, auxiliary gymnasium, dance / fitness studio and our multi-purpose atrium). Our CTS suite includes art, design lab, food lab and wood shop. The school also features a broadcast studio, drama room and a student cafeteria.
About School Name
David Thompson was known in his own time as "The Mapmaker". He provided the first comprehensive geography of the huge western territories that became part of Canada after 1870. Perhaps his greatest legacy was the narrative of his exporations in western Canada. He provides a role model of exploration, both physical and intellectual, for the people who attend this school named in his honour.
