school profiles

Please note | we’re building a new interactive mapping tool to make it easier to find schools using a familiar web interface, and will no longer be using the maps on this page. Because of that, these interactive maps show the boundaries for the 2013-14 school year, and may not be accurate for the 2014-15 school year. For current information, please refer to the “find a school by address” tool to find your designated school, see the list of schools by residential district and grade, or visit the school profile of the school you’re interested in to see the walk zone map in PDF. Thanks for your understanding, and we look forward to sharing our new site with you soon.

David Thompson School is located in the southeast community of Acadia, serving the communities of Acadia, Fairview, MacKenzie Towne, Elgin, Inverness, Prestwick and New Brighton.

The elementary feeder schools for David Thompson are Acadia Elementary and MacKenzie Towne Elementary. Students move on to Lord Beaverbrook High School.

About the School

The school was built in 1962 and has completed a five million dollar renovation (Sept 2000). We are organized into five learning communities, each of which has a science / project room, break-out rooms, and the flexibility to open a wall between two of the classrooms to create a large instructional space. Our recent renovations also include the Information Commons, Band Room and 4 Physical Education locations (main gymnasium, auxiliary gymnasium, dance / fitness studio and our multi-purpose atrium). Our CTS suite includes Art, Food Science, Construction and a Computer lab. The school also features 2 other computer labs, a Broadcast/Film Studio, and a Student Cafeteria.

About School Name

David Thompson was known in his own time as "The Mapmaker". He provided the first comprehensive geography of the huge western territories that became part of Canada after 1870. Perhaps his greatest legacy was the narrative of his exporations in Western Canada. He provides a role model of exploration, both physical and intellectual, for the people who attend this school named in his honour.
