school has 11 classrooms, 2

gymnasium, a library, and a music room.

About School Name
|
| Douglas Harkness School was named after Douglas Scott Harkness who was born in Toronto on March 29, 1903 and moved to Calgary in 1929. He graduated from the University of Alberta, then farmed and taught school in the vicinity of Red Deer. Mr Harkness taught at Crescent Heights High School until 1939. He had distinguished military career and in 1943 was awarded the George medal for "courage, gallantry and devotion to a duty of a high order." In 1945, Mr. Harkness was elected to the House of Commons for the constituency of Calgary East. He continued his public service in the Departments of Northern Affairs, National Resources and Agriculture until his retirement in 1963. Mr. Harkness lived in Calgary until his death in 1999.

- Focus on balanced literacy instruction including daily guided reading in all classrooms.
- Inquiry-based learning projects offer multiple entry points for our diverse learning population.
- We have a Music and Performing Arts program that includes choirs, handbell clubs, djembe drums, instrumental clubs and recorder ensembles. All students engage in Music and Performing Arts instruction and engagement at least 3 times per week.
- Multiple Literacies block during which students explore topics in-depth using multi-intelligences and inquiry approaches. Monthly celebrations of inquiry are shared in whole school assemblies with a Fine and Performing Arts focus.
- Multiple Literacies approach to teaching across the curriculum includes opportunities for fully integrated Fine Arts and Creative Journals, K - 6.
- Student Leadership opportunities for Division II students include Leadership Club, and School Safety Patrol.
- Technology infused in curriculum implementation using a variety of multi-media strategies.
- Computers are housed in clusters in the classrooms as well as in a media centre.
- Daily Physical Education program, Grades 1 - 6.
- Seasonal intramural program, Grades 1 - 6.
- CBE operated lunchrooms.
- Winner of the Anti-racism Video contest March/06 from the Ministry of Multiculturalism and Heritage.
- Nominated 2005, 2006 for the Garfield Weston Award.
- Comprehensive School Health participant since 2003. Our current focus is on nutrition and daily exercise.
