About School Name
To most of us, when we refer to an Egbert student, we are talking about the students
who go to this school. But have you ever wondered who Dr. Gladys McKelvie Egbert
was? What did she do to have a school named after her?
As it turns out, Dr. Gladys McKelvie Egbert was quite an extraordinary lady. She was
born in 1897 in Manitoba and came to Calgary when she was two. Dr. McKelvie's talent
was a musical one; she played the piano brilliantly, and at the age of twelve, she was the
first Canadian to win a three-year scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music in
London, England.
In 1919, instead of going on to a career as a concert pianist, Gladys McKelvie Egbert
returned to Calgary to take care of her elderly mother. She then began her career as a
piano teacher, one in which she seemed to gain as much renown as she did when she
played the piano. Many in the music world felt that Dr. Egbert was one of the world's
best music teachers. Several of Dr. Egbert's students did indeed go onto concert piano
careers.
One of those students, Marilyn Engle, wrote about her experiences as an "Egbert
student." The experiences Ms. Engle was writing about were not of being in junior high
at a school named Dr. Gladys McKelvie Egbert but of her experiences as a student of
Dr. Egbert. It appears that what it meant to be a student of Dr. Egbert meant to be a
student who strived for excellence, who tried to be the best that they could be, and with
the help of their teacher Dr. Egbert, they successfully met their challenges.
Today at Dr. Egbert School, instead of only one teacher, there is a whole team of
teachers, and instead of a small group of students, there are many. Together, like Dr.
Egbert and her students, we strive together to meet the challenges life presents and to
be the best that we can be and more.
School Mission
Dr. Egbert will empower students to learn to the best of their ability, to develop emotionally and physically, and to contribute meaningfully to society.

House Leagues continues this year. Everyone in the school (students, teachers, and support staff) is a member of one of the following four House Leagues: Fox (yellow), Bell (green), Pearson (red), and Szuki (blue). Members earn points for their House through particpating in intramurals, school clubs and teams, being awarded ELK Bucks, attendance, marks, and so on. The House Leagues Committee comprises two staff members, two grade nines, and one grade eight and seven student from each of the Houses. The committee meets on a regular basis to organize activities and discuss methods for motivating everyone in the school to become involved. At the end of the year, the House with the most points will win the most coveted ELK Cup.
Three days during the year are set aside as special ELK Days. These are opportunities for students to work on team building and resiliency skills through participating in school-wide activities.
