school profiles

Please note | we’re building a new interactive mapping tool to make it easier to find schools using a familiar web interface, and will no longer be using the maps on this page. Because of that, these interactive maps show the boundaries for the 2013-14 school year, and may not be accurate for the 2014-15 school year. For current information, please refer to the “find a school by address” tool to find your designated school, see the list of schools by residential district and grade, or visit the school profile of the school you’re interested in to see the walk zone map in PDF. Thanks for your understanding, and we look forward to sharing our new site with you soon.

Nellie McClung School is located in the southwest community of Palliser, serving the communities of Bayview, Palliser and Pumphill. The GATE program serves students in Areas IV and V through a busing program. Most of the students from Nellie McClung School move to John Ware School for Grades 7 to 9 and then on to Henry Wise Wood High School.

About the School

The school was built in 1969 and is situated on 7.72 acres. The school has 22 classrooms built around a media center.

Our school is host to a community program and two special education programs. Students attending the GATE program are in Grades 4 to 6, and come from various communities south of the Bow River. This program provides educational opportunities for gifted and talented students. Technology is an integral tool in the learning process for all our students.

About School Name

Nellie McClung's spirit lives on in the school named for her. She was an astute politician, a prolific writer, a keen activist for the women's rights, a dynamic speaker with a sharp tongue and a keen wit. She began school at age 10 and graduated with a teaching certificate at age 16. Her writing led her to take up the banner of the suffragettes and, having won the vote for women, went on to be elected to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. Still not satisfied, she joined the Famous Five to fight the "person's Case" which finally declared women "legal persons" in Canada. Nellie McClung's determination, commitment, and zest for living is a model of which the students at the school can be proud.
