About School Name
|
Nellie McClung's spirit lives on in the school named for her. She was an astute politician, a prolific writer, a keen activist for the women's rights, a dynamic speaker with a sharp tongue and a keen wit. She began school at age 10 and graduated with a teaching certificate at age 16.
Her writing led her to take up the banner of the suffragettes and, having won the vote for women, went on to be elected to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. Still not satisfied, she joined the Famous Five to fight the "person's Case" which finally declared women "legal persons" in Canada. Nellie McClung's determination, commitment, and zest for living is a model of which the students at the school can be proud.
