Nellie McClung School is located in the southwest community of Palliser, serving the communities of Bayview, Palliser and Pumphill. The GATE program serves students in Area V through a busing program. Most of the students from Nellie McClung School move to John Ware School for Grades 7 to 9 and then on to Henry Wise Wood High School.

About the School

The school was built in 1969 and is situated on 7.72 acres. The school has 20 classrooms built around a media center equipped with 19 Internet stations.

Our school is host to a community program and one special education program. Students attending the GATE program are in grades 4 to 6, and come from various communities in Area V. This program provides educational opportunities for gifted and talented students. Technology is an integral tool in the learning process for all our students.

About School Name

Nellie McClung's spirit lives on in the school named for her. She was an astute politician, a prolific writer, a keen activist for the women's rights, a dynamic speaker with a sharp tongue and a keen wit. She began school at age 10 and graduated with a teaching certificate at age 16. Her writing led her to take up the banner of the suffragettes and, having won the vote for women, went on to be elected to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. Still not satisfied, she joined the Famous Five to fight the "person's Case" which finally declared women "legal persons" in Canada. Nellie McClung's determination, commitment, and zest for living is a model of which the students at the school can be proud.
