James Short Memorial School is located in the southeast community of Penbrooke Meadows, serving the communities of Applewood (bused), and Penbrooke Meadows. Students from James Short Memorial School move to G.W. Skene School for Grades 4 - 6, then to Ernest Morrow
School for Grades 7 to 9 and then to Forest Lawn High School. Some students may go to Jack James High School.
About the School
The school was built in 1972 and is situated on 70.00 acres. The school has 18 classrooms and one portable. There is a library, music room and gymnasium. A lunchroom program operates for all students who are registered. The school is divided into five learning communities, each focused on multiaged groupings of Grades 1, 2, and 3. There are four full day kindergarten classes. This is the third year for the Early Development Center, (EDC) a preschool program for 2, 3 and 4 year old complex learners. This is the first year of our third EDC program focusing on 3 and 4 year old children who have autism. The school has a congregated computer teaching area with pods of MacIntosh computers in classroom areas. We currently have three SMART boards located in three different learning communities. Two playgrounds and a naturalized area provide young children with opportunities for play and outdoor learning experiences.
About School Name
James Short Memorial was officially opened in 1973. It was built in memory of the original James Short School, which was built in 1904. The school was named after James Short, a pioneer, teacher, lawyer, and school board trustee. The cupola of the original school holds a place of honor in James Short Square on 4th Avenue S.W.
