The school has 11 classrooms and 8 relocatables, a two-station gymnasium, a music room, and a learning commons area consisting of a library, a computer lab, a professional library and a popular story corner. Currently, we have 3 Kindergarten classes in the English program and 2 Kindergarten classes in the French Immersion program. Students in grades 1 to 4 attend the English program. Students in grades 1 and 2 attend the French Immersion program.
About School Name
Our school was named after Janet C. Johnstone. Janet was born in Ferintosh, Alberta, attended the Camrose Normal School, and taught in rural Alberta before settling in Calgary in 1942. She taught in several Calgary schools: James Short, Haultain, Elbow Park, Glengarry, and the University Demonstration School.
Janet Johnstone was appointed Primary Supervisor in 1952 and Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Schools in 1964. She was the first woman in this senior administrative capacity. During a career that spanned 43 years, Janet Johnstone served on the Elementary School Program Commission and committees of the Department of Education and the University. She promoted the establishment of the first kindergarten programs in Calgary and was a dynamic part of every major development in the organization and curriculum in Calgary during her period in office. Janet Johnstone retired in 1973 and passed away shortly after our school opening.
School Mission
School Vision: The voices of all stakeholders are heard and valued as we work toward our common purpose.
The school is a fertile environment for mind, body and senses. We plan for meaningful learning experiences and connections that deepen the learner's understanding. School-wide teaming, valued support of specialists, and active parent involvement enhance our ability to use flexible groups, meet different learning styles, provide enrichment, and effectively use staff and parent expertise to meet all of our children's learning needs.
Staff members learn together through reflective practice.
Children and adults are nurtured and stimulated in a culture of positive energy, respect for each other and joy.
Everyone can take risks in their learning because they feel cared for and safe.
