About the School
|
The school was built in 1968 and is
situated on 3.2704 acres adjacent
to a beautiful city park. The present
facility is a 41-year-old building
which replaced the original
sandstone school of 1911. It is
representative of the design philosophies of the 1960's with some open areas and some
"closed" classrooms, although moderate remodeling has decreased the extent of the
original open areas. There are 11 teaching areas on the main level each equipped with a SMARTboard,
and 2 rooms on a lower level which are used for art, music and lunchroom. The school has a
gymnasium, computer lab, central library with computer Internet access, an office and staff room.

About School Name
|
Albert Henry George Grey (1851-1917) grew up at Windsor Castle and was private
secretary to Prince Albert and Queen Victoria. In 1894, he succeeded his uncle as
the fourth Earl Grey. He was a politician and diplomat who served as Governor General
of Canada from 1904 to 1911, at the time when Alberta and Saskatchewan became
provinces. He was very popular with Canadians and was one of the few governors
general at that time to complete a full term. In 1909, he donated the Grey Cup, the
trophy which is now awarded annually to the Canadian Football League champion. The
original Earl Grey School was built in 1911 and a gymnasium was added in 1953. The
original three-storey sandstone school was demolished and a new school built in 1968.
