Unique Points
Due to the unique joint site agreement with the community association, the school is able to use the Edgemont Community Center during the day, including the main hall, craft and games room and occasionally, the board room and kitchen facility. The community uses the school gym in the evenings and on weekends. Due to the open and friendly collaboration between the school and the community, both parties benefit from this arrangement.
We believe in building a caring community where people feel valued, supported and respected and most importantly where they believe in themselves. It is our strong belief that the school must create a learning environment, which nurtures the intellectual, emotional and physical growth of our students.
The staff at Edgemont School have established the following priorities in our School Development Plan:
- By focusing on assessment for and of learning and differentiating instruction, students achieve academic success as they become proficient in writing and mathematics.
- By understanding and demonstrating respect, students engage in positive relationships with others.
Our Professional Development focus involves teachers’ involvement in examining the following essential questions for inquiry: - How do we make sense of planning from standards, differentiating learning for the diversity in classrooms and use the classroom data collected to meet the needs of 21st century learners? - What does it mean to be a good human being and manage conflicts and uncertainties that arise in human relationships?
Through various parent donations, grants and casinos our Parent Community has contributed to helping our school move towards our vision of educating our students for the 21st Century. These contributions support technology enhanced learning for our diverse student population. We presently have a 28 workstation Multimedia Centre, 21 Research workstations in the Library and 2 to 4 networked computers in every classroom. In additions we have two roaming wireless PC laptop carts and one roaming wireless MAC Book cart that enable classes to access information and engage in project work in a variety of learning situations. We also have 21 interactive whiteboards (Smartboards) and projection devices. Research demonstrates that use of these interactive whiteboards allow teachers to meet the diverse needs of various students in their classrooms through the use of this technology. Students who learn through visual, audio and tactile learning styles can all easily be accommodated (Glover, Miller, Averies and Door, 2007).
Edgemont School has an active School Council, participating in a variety of committees improving communication, promoting understanding of the issues, and providing opportunities for collaborative problem solving.
Our parent volunteers are an incredible asset to our staff and students.
Through ongoing projects, our focus on Global Citizenship encourages compassion in our students to those in both our local and global communities.
Edgemont School encourages a learning environment where children of different ages and abilities work together cooperatively and collaboratively through extra curricular activities as well as buddy classes.
