  • About School Name

In 1822, Fred Stimson, manager of the Bar-U, sent Tom Lynch to Idaho to buy a herd of cattle. Among the riders recruited to bring it back was John Ware, the first black cattleman in the southwest. He became one of the best stockmen of his time. John Ware, a friendly and sympathetic soul and a fighter against injustice, was known as the best rider on the Canadian side and was equally proficient in handling rope and gun. He was on the Bar-U when George Lane came. After a few years, he went with the Quorn Ranch, between Sheep Creek and the Highwood, and ranged over the area later to become famous as the Turner Valley oil field. Here, he earned the respect of his employers and had considerable responsibility in the management of the ranch. He secured his own ranch in 1888, not far from the Quorn on the north fork of Sheep Creek, adjacent to the ranch of John Quirk, another well-known pioneer. When his cattle herd became too large for this ranch, he sold it and took prairie land on the Red Deer River near the town of Duchess. In 1905, he was killed in a fall from his horse while attempting to cut a steer from the herd.
