Centennial High School is located in the southeast community of Sundance and serves the eight communities of Bridlewood, Chaparral, Midnapore, Millrise, Shawnee Slopes, Shawnessy, Somerset and Sundance. The four main Junior High feeder schools to Centennial High School are David Thompson, Harold Panabaker, Midsun, and Robert Warren.

About the School

Centennial High School was built by the Calgary Board of Education and opened for the 2004-2005 school year. Our population, has grown up to 1700 students and 95 teachers.

The teachers at Centennial High School assist students in developing personalized learner plans and master portfolios. The Personalized Learner Plan is flexible and based on each student's needs and goals. The master portfolio reflects the student's career pathway and high school learning experiences.

Every course offered will advance student understanding. This educational process will assist students in identifying and developing relevant life and work competencies. These competencies will allow student's to pursue career opportunities. The intent of this process is to ensure students make informed life/work choices that lead to post-secondary education options, employment opportunities and other future directions.

About School Name

The high school was named to reflect the Alberta Centennial.

Centennial High is the proud home of the Coyotes.

School Mission

“Preparing Students for Life and Work”

Unique Points

    Advanced Placement

Advanced Placement (AP) courses allow students to earn credit or advanced standing at most of Canada’s colleges and universities (http://www.ap.ca/pages/03_AP_schools.htm). This program provides students with opportunities to pursue university studies while still in a high school setting. We currently offer AP courses in Physics, Chemistry, Science, Math, English and Social Studies.

    Construction

The Centennial Construction students have been using our newly acquired CNC carving machine to bring their tables and cabinets to a new level of workmanship. They are also enjoying the use of our three new Saw Stop table saws. These machines are the safest made and can ensure that safety at Centennial will never be compromised.

    Commercial Foods

The program is offered to students in grades 10, 11 and 12. Students rotate through various stations in the kitchen, learning by working in the cold / salad kitchen, hot foods area and the bakeshop. The class is beneficial for those who would like some basic exposure to working with food, and can be built upon gradually leading up to post secondary education in the chef’s trade.

    Cosmetology

The Cosmetology Department at Centennial High School allows students the opportunity to express themselves creatively while learning valuable career skills. The Cosmetology Lab operates like a full service salon, and students perform client service on members of the community, teachers and other students regularly. Students who successfully complete the entire Cosmetology program are able to articulate the government trade exam upon graduation, giving them a great start on their career pathways!

    Fluor Partnership

Our vision, "Preparing students for life and work through a seamless partnership between Centennial High School and Fluor Canada, which supports academic and experiential learning to the benefit of our students, school and community." allows students to partner with Fluor as they compete in Engineering Month activities, participate in job shadows, create Fine Arts displays and win scholarships.

    IF Green Earth Science Program

Environmental Studies couples the academic study of Biology 20 and Chemistry 20 with hands-on experiential modules pulled from 3 CTS courses – Wildlife, Energy & Mines and Tourism. Throughout the semester students will have the opportunity to study physical, chemical and biological interactions of the natural environment while participating in a variety of outdoor learning opportunities. The Environmental Studies program will offer students the opportunity to challenge themselves physically and academically, gain skills in personal development, leadership, outdoor travel and much more, while learning how to think innovatively about global and local issues. Through practical, hands-on experience and authentic situational learning opportunities, it is hoped that students will gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for their physical and social surroundings.

    Information Commons

As Centennial’s portal on the planet, the Information Commons promotes learning through inquiry, supported by a broad spectrum of current resources offered in multiple formats. It includes the professional services of the Library; the Career Centre; Careers by Design; Work Experience; CALM-Online; and iLearn.

    Interactive Science 20 Program

An informal partnership has been formed with The Friends of Fish Creek Provincial Park and Centennial High School. Students in one of our first semester Science 20 classes take advantage of the close proximity to the park. Students are led on guided tours provided by Provincial Park Staff and volunteers. They learn about invasive plants and animals, learn about the history of the park and volunteer with a park program. One year students worked on the Trail Care program and another semester worked on beaver tree wrapping. Students use backpack labs to test the creek for phosphates, nitrates, dissolved carbon dioxide levels, acidity levels etc. Students participate in an actual pond study, using dichotomous keys to identify invertebrates. Participants visit the park during regular class time once a week for thirteen weeks. Guest speakers sometimes come to the school if the weather doesn’t cooperate. Students are exposed to various career opportunities as well through participation in this program.

    Pre-Engineering

This program is unique to Centennial High School and is in fact the first of its kind in Western Canada. Pre-Engineering students are engaged in a very independent and diverse learning environment. In addition to classroom studies, students work in a state-of-the-art technical lab where multimedia curriculum is combined with hands-on application of theory.

Robust Fine and Performing Arts Program

Numerous opportunities are provided for students to expand and develop their individual talents in the Fine and Performing Arts. Career development is explored through connections with post-secondary institutions, galleries, visiting artists, clinicians, theatre groups, architects, draftspersons, graphic artists, speakers and musicians.

Students registering for Grade 10 should have done so at their designated school. Students currently not attending a Calgary Board of Education school and who live in the communities of Sundance, Midnapore, Somerset, Shawnessy, Shawnee Slopes, Millrise, Bridlewood and Chaparral should contact Centennial High School administration at (403) 256-8140 to register.
