G. W. Skene School is located in the southeast community of Penbrooke Meadows. In addition to receiving students living within our Penbrooke Meadows boundary, approximately 150 students are bussed from the community of Applewood. Our school is unique in that we are a Division II school having only students in Grades 4 - 6. Students in Kindergarten and Grades 1 - 3 attend James Short Memorial School located on the adjoining field. Students move from G. W. Skene to Ernest Morrow School for Grades 7 to 9 and to Forest Lawn High School. Our students bring a rich diversity to our school community with approximately 60% of our students having English as a second language represented by 18 different languages.

Unique Points
|
We approach our work through a strength-based resiliency model. The Big Brothers and Sisters Mentorship Program, with mentors from Forest Lawn High School, support relationship building within our school. Involving students in leadership groups, participating in fundraising efforts with the Terry Fox Run, MS Read A-Thon, and participating in the Christmas Hamper Food Drive facilitates service to others. The Fuel For School Breakfast Program provides breakfast each morning to those students needing it, the Duck Soup program supplies hot soup two lunch hours a week, and the Brown Bag Lunches program provides students with a nutritious lunch if they are in need. Students are ensured in having warm clothing through the efforts of the Rotary Club of Heritage Park, Jacket Racket, and the Boots For Kids Program.
