school profiles

Please note | we’re building a new interactive mapping tool to make it easier to find schools using a familiar web interface, and will no longer be using the maps on this page. Because of that, these interactive maps show the boundaries for the 2013-14 school year, and may not be accurate for the 2014-15 school year. For current information, please refer to the “find a school by address” tool to find your designated school, see the list of schools by residential district and grade, or visit the school profile of the school you’re interested in to see the walk zone map in PDF. Thanks for your understanding, and we look forward to sharing our new site with you soon.

The school is located within the south west community of Shawnessy and serves the residents of this community as well as Somerset, Millrise and Shawnee Slopes. Our large school grounds are adjacent to the community skating rink and the school grounds of Father Doucette School.

About the School

Our school opened in September 2009 and now serves students in grades 5 -8, offering programs as outlined in the Alberta Education Program of Studies. Our spacious facility was designed for the learning needs of adolescents. Natural lighting streams through many windows and enhances the classrooms. Students benefit from an integrated and innovative approach to curriculum. Learning is enhanced through modern technologies. Students have access to a robust collection of print and digital resources, laptops, and SMARTBoards. A focus on inquiry-based learning invites engagement with imagination and supports students in becoming contributors to their world.

Our school has a

  • two storey Learning Commons,
  • a large main gymnasium,
  • an auxiliary gym,
  • dance studio,
  • fitness centre,
  • band room,
  • bright art room
  • drama space. In addition to these specialized places, there is a student gathering space large enough to accommodate our food services area and supervised lunchroom program. The school has a unique classroom configuration of pods, with break out spaces for flexible grouping to support student learning needs. In addition to the pods, relocatable classrooms are adjoined to the building.

  • About School Name

Samuel W. Shaw was a remarkable Calgarian for whom the area of Shawnessy, Shawnee Slopes and Shaw Meadows in Fish Creek Park was named. He was an innovator in Calgary having created the first phone line from his store in Midnapore to one in downtown Calgary. His pioneering spirit and innovation will be a good example of the work of the new middle school.
