    Unique Points

    • Cambrian Heights is a vibrant, dynamic and inclusive learning community dedicated to advancing student learning through meaningful engagement, a strong literacy base, using critical inquiry based approach, collaborative teaching practice and a generative and interdisciplinary infusion of the Fine and Performing Arts and Technology. Our school development and renewal work focused on maintaining high academic standards, multiple literacy learning, differentiated instruction and critical inquiry to advance the learning for our diverse learners. Through character and citizenship development, students were encouraged to be actively involved in school, local and global community endeavours. One of our central beliefs is that an atmosphere of respect, compassion and responsibility in a safe and caring environment that promotes optimum learning. Differentiated instruction for students with special needs as well as English as Second Language learners is supported by an on-site resource teacher and English as Second Language assistant who work with classroom teachers to organize appropriate instruction and interventions. We have daily Physical Education as well as French as a Second Language and Culture instruction using the AIMS method at Grade 4, 5, and 6.As well, we are a family -centred learning community and sustaining the sense of community and belonging is nurtured by a number of partnerships such as Big Brothers and Big Sisters In- School Mentoring, Grandparent Program and Families and Schools Together. Similarly we were in our second year of the Comprehensive School Health Initiative whereby we received enhanced public health nurse support as well as an opportunity to develop and promote active and healthy life style choices. Our learning community has adopted “Effective Behavior Supports,” and Character Education principles. Our plan endorses effective instructional strategies, consistent discipline procedures, logical consequences and positive reinforcement to teach the student the skills and appropriate behaviors. Effective Behavior Supports (EBS) promotes positive relationships, conflict resolution, problem solving, and social development and communication skills and in the new school year, the introduction of the Dare to Care initiative has been sponsored by our School Council. Our parent community remains highly involved and supportive of our school through their commitment to residency work and projects such as the transformation of our schoolyard into a naturalization area and new creative playground. We have a before and afterschool daycare, Children Come First as well as the majority of our students participate in noon supervision; students are organized in their classrooms with access to microwaving on rotated basis, emergency Tuck Shop supplies and an optional milk program. Bus receiver school for the three new northwest communities of Evanston, Kincora and Creekside.
