About School Name
|
Alex Munro was born on May 13, 1895 in Evanton, Ross-shire, a small village in northern Scotland. He started gardening when he was a schoolboy and at seventeen became an apprentice gardener on a Scottish estate. He gardened on different Scottish estates until 1920, with the exception of wartime service. He came to Alberta in 1920 and soon joined the City of Calgary's Parks Department. In 1939, he became a Fellow of the Royal Horticultural Society. Mr. Munro became superintendent of City Parks in 1949 and retired in 1960. During these years, he wrote a weekly gardening column in the Calgary Herald and was in demand as a judge of flower shows. Until his death in 1966, he was known as "Mr. Gardener" to many Calgarians.
