Renovations have been on-going with a new roof and windows and the front siding. Teachers offer a variety of lunch-hour clubs including intramurals, writing clubs, art clubs, dance clubs and both Division I and II Leadership Cores. We have a parent-run Before and After School Care Program and a Lunchroom Program. About School Name
Alexander Ferguson School was named in honor of Captain Alexander Hamilton Ferguson who, for 34 years, served as physical education director of the Calgary Public School Board. Captain Ferguson was responsible, more than any other individual at the time, for building the outstanding physical training program in local schools. The school celebrated its 50th anniversary on October 24, 2006.
School Mission
Our mission is to develop a school culture of Generosity, Independence, Mastery and Belonging within a "Learning Through the Arts" philosophy.
SCHOOL VISION
Confident, caring, creative and contributing people:
our responsibility,
our opportunity,
and our legacy.
PURPOSE STATEMENT
Providing diverse opportunities enabling learners to experience success.
School Motto
Our School Motto is "Making a World of Difference" and is vividly illustrated in our outside school mural painted by nationally-recognized mural artist and former AFS parent, Doug Driediger. One of our school goals is to increase students' active participation in citizenship - both in the school and beyond.
Unique Points
Uses as a major teaching strategy the "Learning Through the Arts" philosophy. This means the school is inserviced by and works with numerous mentor artists to plan and teach some of the curriculum. When "Learning Through the Arts", students are involved in authentic learning experiences and problem-solving situations using music, the visual arts, drama, speech arts, writing and dance, to learn curriculum content. "Learning Through the Arts" is a trade-marked, non-profit international organization of the Royal Conservatory of Music.
Has an outstanding music specialist (assistant principal) who has his own band and who also plans to use "SoundBeam" technology and has directed the operation of a student-run Radio Broadcast
Has a networked MAC computer lab located in the library and a wireless mobile lab. It is well-utilized by all members of our learning community. Technology is integrated into all areas of the curriculum through access to CD Roms, Internet and student-created multimedia projects. In addition, networked computers are located in each classroom.
Focuses on Inquiry learning, a generative, question-based approach to involve students in becoming engaged in their own learning.
Is a small school that fosters a safe and caring atmosphere where all children and adults have a strong sense of community."The Circle of Courage" philsophy helps guide students' behaviour and citizenship. All voices are valued and respected and collaboration rather than competition is emphasized. Positive communication between the home and school is a priority through daily agendas and nightly homework.
Has an active Parent Advisory Council/Society which collaborate with staff on matters relating to the school. Parents are keen learners and knowledgeable about curriculum practice. Examples of major efforts this year are the financial support for "Learning Through the Arts", a Bake and Craft sale at our Winter performance and the dedicated work on the Naturalization Project. Parents also operate the Before and After School Program and the Lunchroom.
Has been consistently recognized by both parents and students as having a dedicated excellent staff. Staff are committed to recognizing the diverse learning needs of all the children and to learning more about incorporating the arts into their pedagogy.
Is a "Nut Awareness Zone" and practices "garbageless" lunches.
