Connaught School is located in and serves the southwest inner city community of Connaught. It faces 12th Avenue between 10th and 11th Street S.W. Students from Connaught School move on to Mount Royal School for Grades 7 to 9 and Western Canada High School.

An extensive renovation of Connaught School began in the fall of 2007. The renovation was completed in August 2009, and the school reopened for students on August 27.

About the School

Connaught School is one of the original sandstone buildings in Calgary and presently has the distinction of being the oldest operating school in the system. Connaught School was built in 1911 on 3.24 acres at a cost of $98,000, plus $18,000 for plumbing and heating. In 1912, the doors of Connaught School were opened to accommodate the increasing population of the Beltline area.

In 1920, four new classrooms were added to the auditorium on the third floor. As junior high was added, more space was needed for physical education so a new gymnasium was added in 1952. Our 2009 renovation resulted in the building earning a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver Standard while retaining its heritage. The atrium and new gymnasium on the south side of the building are welcome additions to this new / old school.

Connaught also has the distinction of being granted the first home and school charter in Western Canada. This group, originally known as the "Mothers' Club," was organized in 1913. This proud tradition continues today with the Connaught School Council.

Connaught School serves children in kindergarten through grade 6 school, thriving in the heart of the inner city. Our learning environment is diverse as our children come from 53 countries around the world. There are 40 languages spoken at Connaught. We have a full day kindergarten program and strong literacy programs to support multi-lingual learners. As well as the regular curricular programs, Connaught students have access to a breakfast program, lunch program, a before- and after-school program, and an after-school activity program. Decidedly Jazz Danceworks has been in residence since 1994, offering classes, performances and scholarships to our students. The Calgary Board of Education is proud to support Connaught as a Centre for English as a Second Language. We are closely alligned with the System ESL Team and work together to develop outstanding practices and outcomes for multi-lingual learners. We work with students in multi-aged learning environments that utilize 9 classrooms, a gymnasium, library, and music room. Each classroom has computers networked with the Calgary Board of Education server. The playground, which also serves the community, includes a creative playground, playing fields and a concrete games area.

We have a unique and successful business partnership with ConocoPhillips Inc., based on the belief that literacy is the foundation for success in all facets of life. Employees are involved with the staff, parents, and students at Connaught School during their work day. The partnership won the Mayor's Award for Partnership Excellence for "Excellence in Curriculum Enhancement and Development" in 1997 and the year 2000.

About School Name

The school was named after the Duke of Connaught who, in 1914, as Governor General of Canada, presented the school with portraits of himself and his wife. These portraits continue to be proudly on display in Connaught's main foyer.
