William Reid School is a small, single-track K-4 French Immersion school of about 200 students located in the southwest community of Elbow Park. The following communities fall within William Reid's boundaries: Altadore, Bankview, Belaire, Beltline, Britannia, Chinatown, Cliff Bungalow, Downtown Commercial Core, Downtown East Village, Downtown West End, Eau Claire, Elbow Park, Elboya, Erlton, Inglewood, Lower Mount Royal, Manchester, Mayfair, Meadowlark, Mission, Parkhill, Ramsay, Rideau Park, Roxboro, South Calgary, Upper Mount Royal and Windsor Park. A boundary map is available on our school website or you can contact the school office (403-777-6940). Students continuing in French Immersion move on to Elboya School for Grades 7 to 9 and then to Western Canada for High School.
About the School
William Reid School was built in 1954 and is situatied on 3.193 acres. It became a French Immersion school in 1979. The school has 10 classrooms including 2 relocatable classrooms. A gymnasium was added to the school in 2003. A variety of technologies have been integrated throughout the school, including SMART Boards in all classrooms and a floating lab of 30 laptop computers. William Reid School has two outdoor classroom/naturalization area to further learning and provide a natural play area for our students.
About School Name
William Reid, the man, was born in Glasgow, Scotland on March 24, 1902. He immigrated to Canada at age 13 and completed school in Calgary. When he was young, he worked in the Kinsman Club and the Junior Chamber of Commerce. Later, he taught a night school class. His many hobbies included photography, gardening, slides and movies.
While working at Harvey & Morrison Chartered Accountants Ltd., William Reid became a chartered accountant and opened his own office in 1933. Because of his keen interest in education, William Reid served on the Calgary School Board starting in 1945. He was president of the board from 1946 until 1950. His interest in education also led him to chair the committee that brought a university to Calgary.
William Reid died on March 30, 1952, and in 1954, this school was named after him.
