Cancellation of Late Bus Service for Extra-Curricular Activities

The Calgary Board of Education recognizes that the cancellation of late bus service beginning the 2010-11 school year has caused change and inconvenience for families.  This decision was not taken lightly.

The Calgary Board of Education is the only school district in the province that has ever offered this enhanced service which was not offered to all middle/junior high schools, or to all students within a school.  Students in bilingual or language immersion programs, alternative, other special programs or regular program students who already travel on CTS to school have not had access to late bus service.

The late bus service was an un-funded service which we are no longer able to offer or maintain, and is just one of a number of strategies developed to move toward fiscal responsibility.

There are many schools that do not have charter school bus services provided at the later hour which have strong athletic and other extra-curricular activities.  Many of our students access Calgary Transit to travel to and from school and this too is an option for students instead of the charter late bus if parents are unable to drive them. Google Transit is a very useful tool in determining city transit trip planning, routes and schedules: http://www.calgarytransit.com/html/google_transit_help.html

We are committed to review our budget commitments and meet with middle/junior high Principals in mid-to-late October to consider each school’s circumstances and options to mitigate the impacts.
