The Calgary Board of Education (“CBE”) provides transportation services for over 26,000 students on charter buses and over 10,000 students who access public transit. There are 586 charter buses that complete 791 bus routes morning and afternoon. As well, 102 buses complete 146 mid-day Kindergarten routes daily. The average bus route is 110 km in length, so the total distance traveled by CBE buses is over 75,000 kms each day.
Put another way, you could say that the CBE is responsible for transporting the equivalent of the population of a small city to the moon and back every month; or from a more earthly perspective, almost twice around the equator every day. And it does so with few serious problems or mishaps, day in and day out, throughout the school year.
